I was painfully bored during my K-12 education. I looked forward to college anticipating that it would be different – more engaging, more interesting, more innovative. I was wrong. My undergraduate education, except for a few bright spots, was just an extension of my K-12 education including more grill and drill with sages on the stages (literally since I went to such a large university); taking notes and taking lots of multiple choice tests.

One interesting and potentially concerning trend that has emerged in compiling data for the K-12 Cyber Incident Map is that the number of schools and/or districts that have experienced multiple cyber incidents is increasing. This may be due to an increased reliance on technology for teaching, learning and school operations as compared to other districts and hence a greater exposure to cyber risks.

I had the chance recently to work with an awesome teacher-led school here in Colorado. Because the school already is pretty amazing, we spent most of our day and a half together fine tuning a few aspects of its work. With data from the K-12 Cyber Incident Map on roughly 200 incidents experienced by K-12 schools and districts since the start of 2016, it is increasingly evident that schools and districts can be categorized in one of three ways with respect to their cyber security experiences: Schools and/or districts may have not knowingly experienced a recent cyber incident (or have managed to avoid public disclosure of any incident(s) since the start of 2016).
