What I Don't Know, Surely, Google Will Tell Me.

The Web20Classroom

There once was a teacher who taught down the hall from me. She was an ordinary teacher. Had several years of experience, rarely had much trouble with kids and by all accounts, was, just, well ordinary. Nothing really stood out about her. Except for one thing.

Using Google Calendar for Lesson Planning

The Electric Educator

Google calendar is a great tool. My wife and I have been using it for over a year to keep track of our family activities. A new feature currently in calendar labs adds the ability to attach a Google Doc to a calendar event. This makes using Google Calendar for lesson planning a powerful tool.

Screencasting Tools

Cool Tools for 21st Century Learners

ScreenToaster : This is a free online screencasting tool with plenty of handy features. The site itself is a great source of already created tutorials and it''s worth checking out. ScreenToaster was very easy to use, and publishing a short screencast was painless. This seems like a wonderful screencasting tool and I will use it again. Go to ScreenToaster Jing: Jing is an old, familiar application that works well and has exciting potential, but it tends to take a long time to load and play.

Why can't schools be miniature Magic Kingdoms?

The Electric Educator

I''m spending my winter break this week in Orlando, Florida with my wife, daughter, and in-laws. We visited the Magic Kingdom yesterday and Downtown Disney tonight. Throughout our visit I vacillated between disgust and amazement at the Disney empire.

Using TeacherTube at Our School

mauilibrarian2 in Olinda

What''s so special about this student-produced video that''s best watched at half-size because of the low resolution? I put it up a few days ago, and as of today, it''s been hit 1174 times! Is it the subject matter (biomass) and how it''s explained in easy-to-understand terms? That''s my guess. Getting this many hits, though, busts the myth that TeacherTube is a small, ineffective tool that''s "not as good as YouTube" and therefore not as worthy of our time and energy.

Liberate Your Data!

I dunno about you, but more and more I find my data being housed somewhere else, mainly " the cloud." Meaning that my calendar, documents email, photos and more are not stored locally on my machine, they are stored on some other computer in some far oft land. And that can pose a problem.

Why Do We Have To Learn This?

Think Before You Tweet.

The Web20Classroom

Social Media is a funny beast. Sometimes it can be your best friend. Like finding that long lost high school BFF on Facebook or coming across that link that fits right into your lesson in the morning. But sometimes it can be your worst enemy. Like it was for me recently. I was misquoted, backhandedly called a racist and, in not so many words told that I might be the most unintelligent teacher around. And all of this happened, out in the open, in 140 Characters or less. First, I made a mistake.

Where Is The Passion.

The Web20Classroom

I am concerned. I am concerned for our profession. I am concerned for our parents. Most of all, I am concerned for our kids. I had a long talk the other day with a very good friend of mine. She is a teacher. A very good teacher. She told me that this might be her last year of teaching. Keep in mind she has only been in the classroom for 6 years but more and more she is feeling the burnout.
