Kidz Type - a great website to learn touch-typing skills

KidzType is a great website which has lots of fun, engaging games for all ages!

When you enter the site, the main option is Dance Mat Typing. Level 1 starts you off with individual letters and spaces, and when you reach Level 4, you will be challenged to use semi-colons and the shift key. It is great for practice and really engaging. Sound effects and cartoon characters create a non-threatening, fun environment. In no time at all, beginners will become experts.

Click on the Games section, and you enter a world of play whilst simultaneously learning.  My favourite is ‘Typing Car Rider’ where you race your vehicle based on your speed of typing: the faster you type, the quicker you go! You can even change things like the theme to desert, city etc.

“There are so many exciting games which I wish I had been able to pay when I was learning to touch type.”

The Lessons section is another area worth exploring.  Type rapidly through a challenge and then you can show off to friends by sharing the results to Google Classroom, Pinterest and more.

The Practices section allows you to test your skills and see how you do with constructing sentences, or for more advanced, whole paragraphs.

Ever wondered which finger you should be using for each key?  The ‘Touch typing finger chart’ will explain exactly that:

  1. I have used Kidz Type in my elementary Kindergarten through 4th grade classrooms and my students really seem to enjoy it. They enjoy going through the wide variety of games, and they love the different topics rather than the basic racing-typing game that they have seen so often. As a teacher, I like how this site breaks down lessons and focuses on teaching typing in baby steps. I have also used the typing assessment to help track my students and show them their progress from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
