Navigating an Ed-Tech Startup’s First International Business Trip

Ed Tech from the Ground Up

I’ll be in Japan in a mere seven days. This will be my first overseas business trip—and I’m filled with equal parts excitement and nervousness. Earlier this year, Listenwise partnered with a Japanese education company, JIEM (or EduLab in the U.S.). Not only did JIEM become a distributor of Listenwise in Asia, it also became a strategic investor. Since our partnership was formed, we’ve had many phone conversations and emails preparing for a test of our product in the Asian market.

Your Teacher Doesn’t Hate You – But She Might Not Like Your Writing

EdNews Daily

Written By: Stephen D. Senturia. Too often a student is reduced to tears or driven to fury by the red marks and criticisms that a teacher puts on an essay or term paper. But there’s another way to respond, one that makes lemonade out of the lemon and creates an opportunity for personal and intellectual growth.

A simple but useful tech idea to replace mini-whiteboards.

EdTech4Beginners

Combine an iPad with the app ‘Paper’ by FiftyThree and you get a great replacement for mini whiteboards. My class used this method in mathematics today and it worked very well. It was certainly more effective with pupils who had a stylus ( here is a link to a good one on Amazon.com ). Click here for my full tutorial on how to use the app.

The Emotional Weight of Being Graded, for Better or Worse

MindShift

As most parents know, kids respond emotionally to the grades they receive — and well beyond the jubilation that goes with an A+ or the despair that accompanies a D. When Jessie, an eighth-grader, got an uncharacteristically low score on a Spanish test, she felt not only embarrassed — “because I’d never done that badly before” — but lousy as well: “I didn’t feel as good about myself,” she said.
