Seven million students took the SAT test last year. While it traditionally is an assessment tool for college-bound seniors, more and more high schools are choosing it as an exit exam for graduating seniors (such as these changes in Ohio and the State of Washington ). Driven in part by the educational imperative to minimize student testing, what better solution than a test already heavily vetted as being inclusive and cross-cultural that many students are familiar with.

Before we get too far into 2017 I like to reflect on what has been and make predictions for what the year ahead will mean for education. Time and time again I find myself thinking “Darn, my predictions aren’t half bad but things are moving too slowly, slower than I expected.” This year, however, I am confident when I say that we are going to experience a lot of change -- largely influenced by shifts resulting from elections, among other factors.

The Principal of Change
FEBRUARY 1, 2017
Innovation in education should not be a luxury, but is now a necessity. The world is changing so rapidly and it is not longer about schools “embracing change”, but creating it. You can wait for it to happen, or you can make it happen; either way change will continuously head our way. Yet their is a disconnect between “innovation” and “doing school” You will hear arguments such as, “I think innovation is important but what about…(insert curriculum

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

What’s the best time for students to have recess? Before lunch, or after? What happens if it rains? If students are misbehaving, is it a good idea to punish them by making them sit out recess? Those are just a few of the issues in new guidelines designed to help schools have good recess. The recommendations come from a group called SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) America and from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Chromebooks are HOT right now. And for good reason. They are affordable, flexible, and easy to manage. And in today's increasingly web-first world, having a device that was born on the web is a good option. At the end of 2015 we learned that 50% of devices in the classroom are Chromebooks. That's pretty amazing considering ChromeOS is only 5 years old and people thought Google was crazy when they said they were developing their own operating system.

Advocating for 9–14-year-old boys and their reading lives is my passion and specialty, however, because I’m female, this hasn’t been an easy row to hoe. People often question me on why I’m not advocating for girls and empowering them instead. But I don’t see my advocacy as a zero-sum game. I see it as imperative for both genders to thrive, not just survive, in the global, knowledge-based, information/technology-driven world they’ll live and work in together as adults.

In many schools, it takes much more than good teaching to meet students’ needs. Issues such as poverty, hunger, homelessness, neglect, abuse and chronic stress can have a significant impact in the classroom. Highland View Elementary is a preK–5 school serving approximately 200 students and their families in Bristol, Virginia. More than 99 percent of students are economically disadvantaged, and approximately one-third of those who enter our school won’t stay through the school year.
