Visualize Learning with Photo Challenges and Projects

Teacher Reboot Camp

“Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.”. – Marc Riboud. Learners of all ages love taking pictures, especially with their phones. Learners can use these photos in projects, digital stories, or other learning projects to provide an authentic voice and to show the learning that is taking place all around them. You can also have learners go on photo challenges and missions instead of assigning typical homework.

Student Agency: Moving From Talk to Action

A Principal's Reflections

When I reflect back on what we were able to accomplish at New Milford High School, I am overtaken by a great sense of pride. We were able to transform the learning culture of a traditional school and in the process got results while becoming an example that others emulated. This was achieved during a time of tumultuous change as the education reform movement was just gaining steam.

When the founder, Juli-Anne Benjamin, asked me to come through, I only asked when, not if. The trek from Harlem to Brooklyn was two trains, about an hour and a half on a Saturday morning. But the conversations and the energy were more than worth it.

What to do when a student constantly refuses to work

The Cornerstone for Teachers

There’s at least one in every classroom–yep, I’m talking about the kid who just sits there, and doesn’t work. The one who needs constant cajoling to put pencil to paper and get started. In some cases, there’s an attitude problem and the student is disengaged from school in general, and in other cases, the student just lacks focus or self-discipline.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Stuck in a rut or going deep?

The Principal of Change

Over the past few years, I have been really focusing on the notion of “innovation in education” and what it actually means? Sometimes though, I feel that there is a lot of repetition in what I am saying, and although a different audience may not have been exposed to my thoughts, I am on a continual basis. It is easy to feel “stuck” That being said, for anyone to really understand something, we must realize that true depth of knowledge takes time.

Sentence Diagramming. Who Cares?

The Innovative Educator

I still remember standing at the chalkboard in Mrs. Kopald's fourth grade class diagramming a sentence. I had no idea what I was writing or why. I drew a straight line and all these branches and just wrote stuff on them. I didn't know what I was really doing and still don't know a past participle from a gerund or direct object. I felt similarly about iambic pentameter in high school which looked like this: × / × / × / / × × / (×) To be or not to be, | that is the question These wer
