I recently organised and ran the Federation of British Schools In Asia (FOBISIA) maths tournament. It was successful and I got positive feedback from both teachers and students. Well done to the winners: Now that it is finished, I thought I would share some of the resources I created/used. They were described by my students as ‘really tricky’!

I’ve been playing Minecraft Education —mostly with students or other teachers—for about four years now. My experience came to a head two weekends ago, when I attended MINECON, the annual Minecraft convention and fan fest held this year in Anaheim on September 24-25. I go to a lot of educational technology conferences, but I don’t have a lot of experience with “fandom conventions.

Faculty development in higher education looks the same today as it did 30 years ago: educators attend face-to-face workshops and consultations in an attempt to find new strategies and ideas for improving learning. But the way faculty teach is drastically different from what it was even five years ago. It’s now the norm for them to lead face-to-face, blended and online classes.

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Note: This article originally appeared in Stanford News. As college students click, swipe and tap through their daily lives—both in the classroom and outside of it—they’re creating a digital footprint of how they think, learn and behave that boggles the mind. “We’re standing under a waterfall, feasting on information that’s never existed before,” said Mitchell Stevens, a sociologist and associate professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE).

Google has announced that it is changing Google Apps for Education to G Suite for Education. This move is much more than a simple rebranding, however, in that many new features will be rolled out as a result of the transition. So far, Google’s marketing strategy has mainly focused on how this change will impact businesses. The world of education, to this point, has been a mere footnote.

As I look back on the summer, one of the things that strikes me is how often a workshop I’ve given has followed a “technology training” at a school. In other words, faculty had already received tech training on the particular platform, device or tool I was asked to address. Sometimes this training had been administered in-house, but often it had been delivered by a technology company who came in and explained how their product works.

Keeping children happily engaged is one of the biggest challenges I hear about in my workshops and training events. Children come to your After-School Program at a lag time in the afternoon where they have already spent a lot of energy and focus during school hours. Their bodies and minds are tired, sugar levels might be on the low side, and they have the urge to let loose after being pent up all day.

Part of the purpose for student usage of technology in the classroom is to allow students to become creators not just consumers. A large part of this creative process for our learners is the resources that they find to put into their product. In this case we are talking about visual resources, or images. Many students and teachers go directly to Google and search images.

By Tanner Higgin, Common Sense Education. It’s clear coding and computer science have become key priorities in K-12 education. Recently in a workshop, I asked a participant if I could use their phone and write a tweet from their account to get them some information. When they handed me their iPhone, I realized that it was an iPhone 4, and confirmed that with them. Compared to my iPhone 7, it seemed so small, and to be honest, quite slow. I kind of laughed in my head, not because of the quality of the phone, but just thinking about a story directly connected to myself and this same version of phone.
