What is an EdCamp?

EdTech4Beginners

Edcamps are organic, participant-driven professional learning experiences for educators across the country and worldwide! I would say the key difference between an Edcamp and a typical educational conference is that they are unstructured and the sessions are based on sharing expertise. Here is how my experience of Edcamp went (I live tweeted during the day): What happened at #edcampBKK ? Have you been to an Edcamp?

Why #Edcamp Is So Awesome

The Web20Classroom

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending another Edcamp. EdcampElon was another event in a long like of teacher-driven professional development that can have a lasting impact on the learning of all who attend. Don''t know what an Edcamp is or looks like? My experience with Edcamp has been that of a participant and an organizer (EdcampNC!). Edcamp appeals to educators from all walks of life. And lecture is discouraged anyway at an Edcamp.

I attended two sessions in the morning, both involved great conversations around teaching and learning. Upon returning home, I got to thinking, we should aspire to have edCamps happening on school campuses every day. It’s a format for meaningful collaboration and it’s educators having face to face discussions around common themes of teaching and learning. So, have an edCamp every day on your campus. For me, it’s been an unconferency kinda week–a celebration of the informal, participant-driven learning experiences that have made huge impact on professional learning culture. The EdCamp Foundation announced the gift of a $2 million dollar, no strings attached, Bill and Melinda Gates grant. It was especially exciting for me because I was there at the birth of the powerful (now international) movement at EdCamp Philly 2010.

Chattanooga, Tennessee had its 6th annual Edcamp GigCity in January. Every year, at the end of the edcamp, participants are asked to give feedback in order to qualify for the door prizes that will be given out next. Due to feedback, the edcamp changed a bit. Every year there was always a bit of feedback that attendees wished there were some choices to just attend led sessions to learn things. I see the benefit of both ideas but I just wanted an Edcamp opinion.

By now you’ve probably heard of edcamps —free, organic, participant-driven, “un-conferences” that empower educators to maximize professional learning experiences and peer networks. So, what if we gave our students the same opportunity their teachers have to learn alongside one another, lift each other up and maximize their learning experiences, all while promoting empathy and kindness? Edcamp After Hours , the first of its kind in northern NJ, ended up being a big hit.

Edcamp Boston!

SpeechTechie

I attended my second Edcamp Boston Saturday, making it my 3rd official "unconference." Edcamps are really more of a movement than anything, an acknowledgment that we as educators have so much we can learn from each other! I was a bit crispy (as in, burnt) going into Edcamp, it being a very busy season at school and with presentations lately, but I found myself re-energized by the environment and, even more so, the people. Edcamp Boston was a great experience.

The do-it-yourself conference is coming to your local public broadcaster, as part of a new venture between the Edcamp Foundation and PBS Education. That represents a huge—and relatively untapped—market for Edcamps, which rely on social media, such as Twitter, to reach educators.
