Why #Edcamp Is So Awesome

The Web20Classroom

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending another Edcamp. EdcampElon was another event in a long like of teacher-driven professional development that can have a lasting impact on the learning of all who attend. Don''t know what an Edcamp is or looks like?

I attended two sessions in the morning, both involved great conversations around teaching and learning. Upon returning home, I got to thinking, we should aspire to have edCamps happening on school campuses every day. It’s a format for meaningful collaboration and it’s educators having face to face discussions around common themes of teaching and learning. So, have an edCamp every day on your campus. EdCamp CT is Aug 10th. I'm going. Are you? You should be!

Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. The Edcamp model is unique in that attendees set the agenda the morning of the conference and the sessions are not led by one person, but are rather a collaboration of both the facilitator and attendees. It is a great way to learn, share, and connect with other educators. EdCamp is coming back to Connecticut this summer. I learned and shared my knowledge with others.

What is an EdCamp?

EdTech4Beginners

Edcamps are organic, participant-driven professional learning experiences for educators across the country and worldwide! I would say the key difference between an Edcamp and a typical educational conference is that they are unstructured and the sessions are based on sharing expertise. Here is how my experience of Edcamp went (I live tweeted during the day): What happened at #edcampBKK ? Have you been to an Edcamp?

My Island View

As educators one would expect that teachers and teacher/administrators should be experts on the best most effective and efficient methods of getting large groups of children to understand, learn, and use information responsibly to create more information. The obvious answer may be that children have a motivation to learn that is different from adults. Knowles identified the six principles of adult learning as: Adults are internally motivated and self-directed.
