Why #Edcamp Is So Awesome

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending another Edcamp. EdcampElon was another event in a long like of teacher-driven professional development that can have a lasting impact on the learning of all who attend. Don''t know what an Edcamp is or looks like?

Celebrating Maker Learning with the Edcamp Foundation

Digital Promise

On Saturday, November 4, more than 60 educators joined Digital Promise and Maker Ed for Edcamp: Maker Promise , a full day of powerful professional learning through and about making. At the end of the day, while attendees reflected and shared highlights of their experience, one attendee shared how they learned how to sync a micro-bit and was excited to share with their students how to do it. Edcamp: Maker Promise was hosted by Friends’ Central School in Wynnewood, PA.

What is an EdCamp?

EdTech4Beginners

Edcamps are organic, participant-driven professional learning experiences for educators across the country and worldwide! I would say the key difference between an Edcamp and a typical educational conference is that they are unstructured and the sessions are based on sharing expertise. Here is how my experience of Edcamp went (I live tweeted during the day): What happened at #edcampBKK ? Have you been to an Edcamp?

Edcamps are the "unconference". They are free, attendee led and driven, places to share and learn. Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. This is a great opportunity to connect, share, teach, learn, and expand their personal learning network.

edCamp Every Day #edCampSV #edCamp

There is no box

I attended two sessions in the morning, both involved great conversations around teaching and learning. Upon returning home, I got to thinking, we should aspire to have edCamps happening on school campuses every day. It’s a format for meaningful collaboration and it’s educators having face to face discussions around common themes of teaching and learning. So, have an edCamp every day on your campus. By now you’ve probably heard of edcamps —free, organic, participant-driven, “un-conferences” that empower educators to maximize professional learning experiences and peer networks. So, what if we gave our students the same opportunity their teachers have to learn alongside one another, lift each other up and maximize their learning experiences, all while promoting empathy and kindness? Edcamp After Hours , the first of its kind in northern NJ, ended up being a big hit.

The do-it-yourself conference is coming to your local public broadcaster, as part of a new venture between the Edcamp Foundation and PBS Education. Between now and May, 10 local PBS affiliates will host a series of specially branded events, called PBS Edcamps, aimed at educators and caregivers of students in Pre-K through third grade. That represents a huge—and relatively untapped—market for Edcamps, which rely on social media, such as Twitter, to reach educators.

I attended my second Edcamp Boston Saturday, making it my 3rd official "unconference." Edcamps are really more of a movement than anything, an acknowledgment that we as educators have so much we can learn from each other! Edcamp Boston was a great experience.

Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. The Edcamp model is unique in that attendees set the agenda the morning of the conference and the sessions are not led by one person, but are rather a collaboration of both the facilitator and attendees. It is a great way to learn, share, and connect with other educators. EdCamp is coming back to Connecticut this summer. I learned and shared my knowledge with others.
