Upon returning home, I got to thinking, we should aspire to have edCamps happening on school campuses every day. It’s a format for meaningful collaboration and it’s educators having face to face discussions around common themes of teaching and learning. So, have an edCamp every day on your campus. Chattanooga, Tennessee had its 6th annual Edcamp GigCity in January. Every year, at the end of the edcamp, participants are asked to give feedback in order to qualify for the door prizes that will be given out next. Due to feedback, the edcamp changed a bit. Our team has always held tight our desire to truly model the edcamp philosophy of participant-driven discussions. I see the benefit of both ideas but I just wanted an Edcamp opinion.

Edcamps are really more of a movement than anything, an acknowledgment that we as educators have so much we can learn from each other! I was an early adopter of Twitter as a means of connecting with other educators, thanks in large part to Will Richardson and Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach. I loved the energy and collaboration that was happening there, as educators around the world found each other and built a network. They had all just been to BarCamp, an unconference for computer programmers and were thinking about creating one for educators. We held the first Edcamp in Philadelphia in May, 2010.

What many people probably don't know is that this is all volunteer led and run, and Edcamp Gigcity is unique in that the organizers represent higher ed, lower ed, public, and private school sectors.
