What Students Want Teachers—and Facebook—to Know About Digital Citizenship

Jivani, the founder and CEO of the Love Your Natural Self Foundation, addressed a room of K-12 students and educators from across the country as part of a two-day event on digital citizenship—the idea of applying civility and civic engagement online.

Hey Edmodo Users, Are Your Groups Secure?

Baker's B.Y.O.D.

I''m an avid Edmodo with Edmodo serving as the hub of my virtual classroom, but I learned a valuable lesson two weeks ago concerning the security of my groups and the trustworthiness of my students. As an Edtech advocate, I''m always willing to try out new tools and I''m adamant about teaching digital citizenship. Two weeks ago, one of my student shared the code to one of my Edmodo groups with his friend. digital citizenship edmodo security students

Digital Dashboard Document

Baker's B.Y.O.D.

So, to get things started, I created a Digital Dashboard Google Document on which my students will see what sites we will be using consistently, the rationale for using that site, and have an area in which they will type in login information not their actual password, but hints or clues in case they forget. digitallearning #flipblogs #flipclass #fln apps blended learning digital digital citizenship digital literacy edmodo flnhub Google ISTE

The school has been 1:1 since 2010, and Lotta is fortunate enough to be able to work with the finding and implementation of digital resources and best practices. Lotta has been using Edmodo since May 2012, and really appreciates "the global teachers'' lounge" that Edmodo creates. Here is her recap of Edmodocon 2013: In Sweden Edmodo Con started at 4pm. I even said my thank yous and goodbyes in the backchannel group on Edmodo, and got some friendly waves back.

Creating Student Community Writing Spaces

Baker's B.Y.O.D.

And I asked the group if they would be willing to create an Edmodo writing group. We don't have a set schedule for posting writing or giving feedback, and even when PARCC acquired all technology in my building, we could keep participating in Scribe City because students could access Edmodo on the phones or at home. In Scribe City, students post writing as either part of the Edmodo Note or an attached Google Doc any time, and anyone in the group can comment.

I recommend encouraging students to use a free MP3 voice recorder instead of a standard voice recorder that saves files as.m4a for easier integration into Edmodo. The Process Edmodo easily embeds MP3''s- just click play (on Edmodo, not on this picture), no downloading! It was presented by the good people over at the #Edmodo app/website. If you aren''t familiar, Edmodo is a social learning platform for schools, often called the "Facebook" for schools because its format is similar. Edmodo has many advantages for many reasons. Check it out: www.edmodo.com #Edmodocon provided educators with the chance to ''virtually'' participate in a full day conference to learn more about the amazing ways to utilize Edmodo for classroom learning and success.

Trying to Ban Facebook is Not the Answer.

Consider using Edmodo , a high quality networking site that is free of charge and aimed at schools for the purpose of creating online learning communities. The Flat Classroom Projects are award winning, quality opportunities for just such an endeavor, and their themes include digital citizenship, social action, and cross-cultural understanding. If you feel lost in the digital world, do not continue in your ignorance.

Tapscott was writing Grown Up Digital and also contacted them and helped spread the word with what they were doing. Don Tapscott talks about customization of digital tools which leads to customization of learning environments. Teacher needs an essential understanding of what the tools are about and digital citizenship issues. Students do NOT innately understand technopersonal skills; they must be taught appropriate behavior and digital citizenship.
