Pokemon Data Handling: A Photo Essay

Getting inspiration from the brilliant Adam Hill, I recently used Pokemon as a stimulus for a data handling unit in mathematics. It was the perfect topic because the pupils love the game and there is so much information available to collect and interpret.

Leaving the task fairly open, my class could choose to survey the class (trainer levels, opinions, achievements etc.) or alternatively use the raw data of different Pokemon characters.

Here’s what we did:

Firstly I displayed the key expectations of the project on Google Classroom.

Next the students wrote a questionnaire. Their Pokemon cards and the website pokemondb.net/ helped them with this.

There is lots of data associated with Pokemon.

After, tables of results were created.

The students then carried out surveys.

A range of graphs were constructed based on the data collected (‘egg groups’ are great for Venn diagrams as some Pokemon belong to more than one group).

Pokemon maths
Some students chose to work on computers.

‘Best’ versions were created of the results tables and graphs.

Work was collated onto a board.
