The Professional Learning Sweet Spot

A Principal's Reflections

For the better part of my educational career, I always referred to any type of learning to assist me as a teacher or administrator as professional development (PD). For the most part, this consisted of attending mandatory district “PD” days, professional learning communities (PLC)’s or approved off-site experiences such as conferences, workshops, or webinars. Through the use of social media, I realized that I didn’t really need to be “developed.”

A Principal's Reflections

Since 2009 I have been a huge believer and advocate for connected learning and the formation of Personal Learning Networks (PLN’s). Now don't get me wrong, I still highly value face-to-face experiences, as there are some natural limits to learning exclusively in a social media vacuum. It is also extremely important for district and school teams to collaborate in person on specific goals. edWeb Personal Learning Network PLN

What is Collaboration for Professional Learning?

My Island View

After being involved in social media for over a decade, I have made a few observations that might be helpful to folks who use social media, more specifically Twitter, to develop and maintain a Personal Learning Network. I started my Twitter account with a plan and focus to use it to develop collegial sources for my professional learning. Using Twitter for professional learning requires a collaborative mindset.

All of these organizations are shifting the needle and rocking professional learning nationwide. Organization: Learning Forward.

What to Identify Before Personalizing Learning

iNACOL defines personalized learning as “tailoring learning for each student’s strength, needs, and interests—including enabling student’s voice and choice in what, how, when and where they learn—to provide flexibility and supports to ensure mastery of the highest standards possible.” How students show what they have learned and celebrate their learning journey is as important to the personalized learning process as engagement, interest, voice, and choice.

Last weekend I finished up a week of speaking and leading professional development by attending NTCamp in Philadelphia. The purpose was to try and give new teachers a jump start on their year by talking about issues that they might face in their first years and to give them ideas on how to make it and stay in the profession. There were sessions about assessment, technology, professional development and others. Social Media. All possible because of social media.

Learning Never Stops

A Principal's Reflections

Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.” – Abigail Adams How do you make, not find, the time to learn and get better? There never seems to be enough time in the day to do what needs to be done both personally and professionally. The same can be said about drive-by professional development. Like change, learning is a process, not an event.

Making Time vs Finding Time

A Principal's Reflections

At one point or another, we have all used the time excuse when it comes to our professional work. First and foremost, make the time to learn, grown, and get better as opposed to finding the time. There is nothing more important to an educator, outside of working with kids, than professional learning. Through social media a Personal Learning Network (PLN) provides a great antidote to the age-old time excuse.

Roadmap to a Job-Embedded Growth Model

A Principal's Reflections

I remember a few years back during a meeting with teacher leaders, a tipping point that would ultimately change the direction of professional growth at my school. As social media embracement was not even a blip on the radar at this time, these teacher leaders were quite skeptical about the alleged benefits I described. Undeterred, I continued to talk about the concept of a Personal Learning Network (PLN) and what it had done for my professional growth.

Why Every Leader Needs a PLN

A Principal's Reflections

Educators who have embraced this concept have experienced firsthand the positive impact on professional practice that being a connected educator brings. Leading in a Remote Learning World

It goes without saying that our teachers have done an incredible job when it comes to adapting to a remote learning world. Now more time is being spent refining plans as lessons are learned and, in some cases, are prepared for schools to be closed the remained of the year.

10 Strategies to Improve Instructional Leadership

A Principal's Reflections

With the evolution of social media yet another responsibility was added to my plate in the form of digital leadership. Not only was I not in classrooms enough, but also the level of feedback provided through the lens of a narrative report did very little to improve teaching and learning both in and out of the classroom. If improvement is the ultimate goal, then we as leaders need to put the most focus on elements of our job that impact student learning.
