8 reasons why my students lead their own conferences

eSchool News

I can clearly picture my eight-year-old self staring out the large window, waiting for my parents to come home from my parent-teacher conference. From that point on, I transitioned to student-led conferences with elementary students. That first year they took 45 minutes per child, and I was meeting with students and their parents during my lunch, after school, or at night at the public library. This past year we added digital portfolios that transformed the conference.

This was my first time attending the conference and I ran into an expected issue: too many interesting and relevant sessions and too little time to attend them all.

One future for research libraries

Bryan Alexander

On May 12 the head of the National Science Library at the Chinese Academy of Sciences , Xiaolin Zhang, gave a major speech to the THETA conference in Australia. In the talk director Zhang laid out a vision for the future of the academic library, and it’s one that both challenged and excited many of us, both within and beyond the library world. Anything they don’t own they obtain through consortial relationships (I think that’s inter-library loan).

Digital Learning Program From @snaplearning Can Boost Your Class Library!

Kleinspiration

On a nearly annual basis, I find that one of the last things that I have left on my to-do list is maintaining my classroom library. This can be a frustrating task in a normal year, however it becomes a much more tedious process when faced with a number of common library challenges. Many things can impact one''s class library (space, money, grade changes) and can create havoc on their library. Print PDFs, Read Digital Books, and Graph Progress Snap!

3 Ways to Rock Your Classroom Library!

Classroom Library Tools If you are a Scholastic.com user, most likely you know about Book Wizard and what an amazing tool it is for finding and leveling books. After learning about and downloading the app, I was sitting with one of my students doing a reading conference. This brief checking out conference just means I have a one-on-one with the child to jot down the titles of their books. I just grab my phone and walk around my classroom library scanning books.

Keep school libraries weird

NeverEndingSearch

A couple of weeks back I presented at a conference about the value of out-of -the-box thinking. On a whim I included a slide that read: “Keep School Libraries Weird.” ” I’ve been doing a little thinking about why, like Austin , we might want to keep school libraries a little weird. Though I know a little about weirdness, especially as the term relates to the libraries I’ve been part of, I don’t pretend to be any sort of expert on Austin.
