For the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure and honor of working on CUE conferences, mostly from afar at my homebase outside of Chicago, Illinois. My role has been to monitor social media, contribute to virtual conversations, and share ideas and resources with the #notatcue folks who are participating from a distance. These slides accompanied my presentation during the Learning Technologies conference and exhibition held at London's Olympia on 25-26 January. I touched on personal learning networks, mobile technologies, games and gamification, the use of social media in learning, the role of user generated content, the phenomenon of ubiquitous connection, and technological convergence.

Last week I participated in the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) 2016 conference. I was there for a few reasons, starting with having the fine opportunity to lead a pre conference workshop, followed by presenting on two panels, helping out with a Twitter component, and reconnecting with dozens of friends and colleagues. OLPC is premised on the basis of one child interacting with one free laptop, in many ways a counter to social forms of learning witnessed in communal contexts such as Mitra's Hole in the Wall project. Mackintosh is a firm believer in social innovation and sees it as the only answer for sustainable education in this century. To help achieve this vision, Mackintosh is setting up the OER University and is evangelistic in his elucidation of this concept.

Related to this development was the rise of what I think of as Social Justice Edtech. This movement asks us to rethink technology to address social problems in education and society. They argue that putatively equitable technologies actually reinstate social inequalities. They worry that the pedagogical benefits of having students participate in the open web and/or social media might be cancelled out by trolls, hate speech and other forms of online abuse.
