Digital Promise is incredibly excited to welcome the Edcamp Foundation to our family of projects and programs. By fully merging our operations, we believe we can do even more to support the community of educators who organize and attend Edcamps across the United States and around the world.

What is an EdCamp?

EdTech4Beginners

Edcamps are organic, participant-driven professional learning experiences for educators across the country and worldwide! I would say the key difference between an Edcamp and a typical educational conference is that they are unstructured and the sessions are based on sharing expertise. Here is how my experience of Edcamp went (I live tweeted during the day): What happened at #edcampBKK ? Have you been to an Edcamp?

For years, organizers of “ Edcamps ,” a popular brand of informal professional development gatherings for teachers, received a resource kit sent by their host organization, the Edcamp Foundation. Edcamp events offered teachers a voice in what they would learn.

Why #Edcamp Is So Awesome

The Web20Classroom

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending another Edcamp. Don''t know what an Edcamp is or looks like? My experience with Edcamp has been that of a participant and an organizer (EdcampNC!). And seeing it from all sides really helps me believe that Edcamp, is quite possibly the best Professional Development I''ve had. Edcamp appeals to educators from all walks of life. The sessions at an Edcamp you would be hard pressed to find any where else.

Edcamps are the "unconference". Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. The Edcamp model is unique in that attendees set the agenda the morning of the conference and the sessions are not led by one person, but are rather a collaboration of both the facilitator and attendees. Here is a great article by Mary Beth Hertz on Edcamp and the unconference idea. Here is a calendar of all EdCamps scheduled so far.

By now you’ve probably heard of edcamps —free, organic, participant-driven, “un-conferences” that empower educators to maximize professional learning experiences and peer networks. The do-it-yourself conference is coming to your local public broadcaster, as part of a new venture between the Edcamp Foundation and PBS Education. Between now and May, 10 local PBS affiliates will host a series of specially branded events, called PBS Edcamps, aimed at educators and caregivers of students in Pre-K through third grade. That represents a huge—and relatively untapped—market for Edcamps, which rely on social media, such as Twitter, to reach educators.

From unCon to edCamp for #CUE16?

There is no box

I spent Friday morning of the conference over at the Hard Rock talking pedagogy, curriculum adoption and Google Apps. That was a big win for me personally because the CUE annual conference can sometimes feel overwhelming with all the tech tools. Which begs the question, is there a place for an un-conference during a traditional conference? I love the edcamp model of unCon. Personally, I wouldn’t mind it being a full blown edCamp.

Year five of Edcamp GigCity is in the books. What many people probably don't know is that this is all volunteer led and run, and Edcamp Gigcity is unique in that the organizers represent higher ed, lower ed, public, and private school sectors. I love that about our edcamp! Often people are a bit overwhelmed by the "no presenters" and "rule of 2 feet" if it is their first edcamp. The EdCamp philosophy makes people smile. So why do educators like edcamps?

Redesigning and Rethinking Conferences-Reflections On #ASCD14

The Web20Classroom

I recently returned from a trip to Los Angeles where I attended the annual ASCD conference. This is one of my favorite conferences of the year because of the diversity of the sessions offered. And this conference was no different. The session where this participatory type learning really benefited the attendees was the session about Edcamps. Kristen Swanson (an Edcamp Founder) designed a session that gave the Edcamp experience.

I am happy to be helping to organize the EdCamp Access unconference this year. EdCampAccess, in the tradition of EdCamps that have taken place around the world, is an unconference devoted to K -12 educators who work with struggling learners. It will start with a student panel and then evolve into a "collaborative conference" where the conference attendees help to build and create the experience.

How Teachers Can Learn From One Another at Unconferences, Meet-ups and Edcamps

Technically, if one trusts the etymology, the best way for a teacher to confer with other educators would be an educator conference. Meanwhile, the most enthusiastic listeners whisper to each other, or form mini-groups outside the conference walls, maybe even at a social gathering later that day. In fact, once you start a legitimate event, the Edcamp Foundation is willing to send you materials and funding to help with the organization, such as breakfast.

Using EDCAMP for Professional Development for All Teachers

Saving Socrates

I attended my first EdCamp, called JEDCampNYNJ and on a Sunday last spring. You may be thinking, what makes this type of conference different than any other professional development conference I may have attended in the past? How often are you stuck at a conference with a less than inspiring speaker or a speaker who is inspiring but impractical (think the explosion of "Tony Robbinses" in education w/ TED) who goes on and on and on. At EdCamps, this is a given.

Why Every Conference Should Be A Connected Conference-#ASCD13

I''ve spent the last several days attending the 2013 ASCD Annual Conference in Chicago. And during the conference the Executive Director sent his first tweet and talked about the importance of educators to embrace social media to extend their learning. The hashtag is very active during the conference and there are bloggers and twitterers invited to be members of the press (full disclosure, I was one of those invited). For me, one of the best parts of the conference.

However, even as they talk about the need for a shift in teaching and learning, educational conferences often model a very familiar learning experience—what Daggett refers to as “Quadrant A” (or what many teachers call less kindly: “sit n’ git”). It can be easy to leave a conference with a tote bag full of materials and new jargon, but very little else. This year’s Model Schools Conference is going to be worlds apart from the traditional education conference.

ASCD is one of the most important and influential conferences in the nation because it’s targeted toward school leaders and those who make big decisions in education. Conferences vs. Unconferences. These presentation sessions are the mainstay of most education conferences that are counted on for professional development in the United States. The only choice for events are those on the menu which for the most part were arranged through RFP’s almost a year prior to the conference. This holds true in local, state, regional and national conferences of most education organizations.
