Making Time vs Finding Time

A Principal's Reflections

Through social media a Personal Learning Network (PLN) provides a great antidote to the age-old time excuse. While online consider making some time to learn and then apply a new skill while earning a digital badge to acknowledge your informal learning. As great as a PLN is to professional growth, make the time to connect face to face with colleagues at conferences and workshops.

EDENTube

Learning with 'e's

I have hosted more than 2 dozen for EDEN over the last few years at conferences in Spain, Norway, Hungary and Sweden. I was one of the opening keynotes for the annual EDEN conference in Bruges (#eden19), and because most of the keynotes are usually interviewed for the EDENTube channel , I found myself in front of the microphone being interviewed by Krisztina Tatrai, one of the secretariat's full time staff. Normally I'm the one doing the interviews.

#CUE17- The Game

CUE

For the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure and honor of working on CUE conferences, mostly from afar at my homebase outside of Chicago, Illinois. My role has been to monitor social media, contribute to virtual conversations, and share ideas and resources with the #notatcue folks who are participating from a distance. I’ve also had the opportunity to work on using digital badging as a way to document professional learning at CUE events. CUE Media Festival.

The Professional Learning Sweet Spot

A Principal's Reflections

For the most part, this consisted of attending mandatory district “PD” days, professional learning communities (PLC)’s or approved off-site experiences such as conferences, workshops, or webinars. Through the use of social media, I realized that I didn’t really need to be “developed.” In Digital Leadership I emphasized how input from educators is crucial to the success of any professional learning experience, as is time.

Roadmap to a Job-Embedded Growth Model

A Principal's Reflections

As social media embracement was not even a blip on the radar at this time, these teacher leaders were quite skeptical about the alleged benefits I described. It was stressed that this time was not to be used to make copies, leave the building to get coffee/food, or socialize in the faculty room. Adding more depth to the PGP process and portfolio has been the digital badge platform created by media specialist Laura Fleming to acknowledge the informal learning of our teachers.

Uncommon Learning

A Principal's Reflections

They have embraced this digital world as it provides consistent relevance and meaning through an array of interactive experiences. These initiatives allow students to use real-world tools to do real-world work, focus on developing skills sets that society demands, respond to student interests, empower students to be owners of their learning, and focus on ways to create an environment that is more reflective of the current digital world. The world today is changing at a fast pace.

Student privacy, easier-to-use digital tools for instructors, and efforts to offer alternative credentials were some of the most-talked-about topics this week at the South by Southwest Edu conference, an offshoot of the popular South by Southwest music festival. But the rules and norms for handling digital information generated by students are far from clear. Few were predicting, however, that new certifications or badges would eliminate the value of a college degree.
