The failed legacy of NCLB should provide a stark reminder that pummeling students with standardized tests will not achieve the desired outcome. I also hope that those who block social media, ban students’ devices, and mandate Common Core scripts understand that these decisions are destroying a love for learning.

These indicators have become so embedded in the minds of those judging our schools and work that we, like everyone else, worked hard to focus only on initiatives that would hopefully produce favorable outcomes in those areas. If we were doing well we continued down the same path allowing the status quo to reign supreme.

If educators can count on one sure-fired outcome of the largest national education conference in America, it is the information feeding frenzy that accompanies it. I think there might be more social media interaction with east coast events because of the time zones. This year it is Philadelphia. Conferences are not cheap.

Social Media and Connected Learning. On Saturday morning, during the “Saved by Twitter” session, I watched complete strangers huddle in groups to discuss social media, their use of Twitter, the challenges involved in using social media and I witnessed a few people send their first tweet or use a hashtag for the first time.

Or Spark Page might be the tool they choose to reflect on the outcome of a science experiment. This will require them to use a variety of keywords as they sort through the Creative Commons-licensed images available within Spark’s search tool. Students might create a Post to spotlight a quote from a book they are reading.
