The first session revolved around the very real challenges of integrating technology into classroom instruction from the perspective of two willing (but under supported by their district) teachers. Upon returning home, I got to thinking, we should aspire to have edCamps happening on school campuses every day. So, have an edCamp every day on your campus. In the staff lounge, in your classroom, post a few topics and get together to discuss. Commentary edcamp

An innovative professional development model comes to the classroom. Edcamp “unconferences” have shattered the traditional model for professional development, and they’re catching on as a way for educators to share their ideas and expertise in an informal, collegial way. By now you’ve probably heard of edcamps —free, organic, participant-driven, “un-conferences” that empower educators to maximize professional learning experiences and peer networks. PD After Hours Earlier this year, Hackensack Public Schools hosted its first edcamp at Nellie K. Edcamp After Hours , the first of its kind in northern NJ, ended up being a big hit. We held the first Edcamp in Philadelphia in May, 2010. People tweeted about it and around the country and the world; people began to follow #edcamp! The energy in that place gave birth to a movement that has grown in under five years from a single, initial Edcamp to over 600 events around the world. Edcamps became so powerful because they recognize and honor the expertise of teachers. Each Edcamp is organized by educators, for educators.

The Importance of Andragogy in Education

A question that haunts me however, at almost any education conference that I attend is: Why are so many (not all) of these educators, who are so skilled in a classroom of kids, so bad at teaching in a room full of adults for professional development? It is probably the key to the success of the Edcamp movement. All of the Edcamp sessions are guided conversations.

I started coming up with excuses not to go but seeing how I’d missed the last few edCampSFBays, I set the alarm, woke up early on Saturday and headed out for an edCamp, SFBay style. From 8-3 (and for about an hour more at the after party), I was reminded why edCamps are awesome. Far from being an exercise in effort (although getting there took some), edcamp was a welcome state of mind. Commentary edcamp

Needless to say, I'm trying to look at methods from a non-marginalizing approach and make the assumption that every teacher is trying their best to meet the needs of their classroom goals and individual students. On top of all this I helped lead Edcamp Gig City this past Saturday and when I'm looking at the feedback I can't help but think.even teachers don't truly understand how to best engage in group discussions.
