In my last blog post , I wrote about the rebirth of career and technical education (CTE) in U.S. I closed by suggesting the growth of maker labs — or makerspaces — in schools presented some interesting opportunities. But one site, a prestigious all male prep school, decided instead to use its funds to build a full-scale makerspace in the school’s former library. It's primarily focused on educators working with elementary age students. MORE
But we also know that for many educators summer is a time to collaborate, try new tools, and come up with ideas. Studies have shown that the gap between what high- and low-income families spend on education enrichment has tripled in the last 40 years. Today, high-income families spend nearly $7 in education enrichment for every $1 low-income families spend. Our makerspace is a small room off of our library that was once an office and storage space. It is now a vibrant hub of activity, stocked with a variety of high-tech and low-tech supplies that challenge and inspire our little makers. This past year has helped to give our maker movement stronger momentum with the addition of school sponsored clubs (multi-grade makers club and Lego Robotics). Creating Maker Spaces.

But we also know that for many educators summer is a time to collaborate, try new tools, and come up with ideas. Studies have shown that the gap between what high- and low-income families spend on education enrichment has tripled in the last 40 years. Today, high-income families spend nearly $7 in education enrichment for every $1 low-income families spend. In Pittsburgh, kids might join the growing Maker Movement or pick up some engineering skills while making robots.

When we have testing in our Library, I put all our Makerspace stuff on an AV cart and roll it into our server room. You can take baby steps into the Maker Movement. I've been saying that for 7 years or so.long before I blogged about it, I tried it out. I'm not 100% sold, even after 7 years of talking about the Maker Movement, that it's something that's here to stay and not just a fad. Big or small, lavish or little, it's all about the maker mindset.

As an educator, particularly one who is quite invested in the maker movement, I was captured by his conversations and transparency. Of course there are countless lessons the education community can learn from Mr. Musk and his work, but Mr. Musk's involvement with the events in Thailand, made me think specifically about what we could learn from his approach to design. Design Thinking is a process that has been widely adopted in education.

In my last blog post , I wrote about the rebirth of career and technical education (CTE) in U.S. I closed by suggesting the growth of maker labs — or makerspaces — in schools presented some interesting opportunities. But one site, a prestigious all male prep school, decided instead to use its funds to build a full-scale makerspace in the school’s former library. It's primarily focused on educators working with elementary age students.
