Do we gain by debating the merits of blended learning?

The Christensen Institute

On Monday, I had the opportunity to take part in a spirited debate about blended learning at the iNACOL Symposium in Orlando. The debate focused on blended-learning research and what it tells us about blended learning’s effectiveness. Below is my take on how we should interrogate the efficacy of blended learning in a manner that actually helps practitioners solve their most acute problems. Does blended learning work?

Technology doesn’t drive blended learning success … or does it?

The Christensen Institute

Blended-learning proponents can point to a growing number of schools that consistently achieve extraordinary student learning results. But is technology the key to their success? Recently, I visited five blended-learning schools in Las Vegas and the San Jose area that are earning accolades for serving low-income and minority students and achieving strong student learning outcomes: Dr. Owen C. Data-driven instruction.

Beyond Technology: Blended Learning Conference Debates Equity, Cultural Inclusion

Edsurge

For a conference named after “blended learning,” many attendees were surprised to learn that they did not agree on what the term meant. Dr. Dallas Dance, Superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools, was among the first to raise this during a session at the 6th Annual Blended Learning Conference , held last weekend in Rhode Island. “I I was talking to a colleague who was using blended and personalized learning the same way,” says Dance.

The best new blended resource for teachers

The Christensen Institute

At the Christensen Institute, we often receive requests from school districts to provide professional development for their teachers. Although our resources are fantastic for giving district and school leadership teams a set of theory-based frameworks for planning and implementing a blended-learning program, we don’t have much to offer individual teachers in terms of practical strategies to help them run a blended classroom on a daily basis.

A Back-to-School, Personalized Learning Toolkit

Growing up, I received what was largely a one-size-fits-all education; as a result, I struggled to connect academically to this model. Today, I’m amazed at the impact technology can have on the learning process—especially when it enables teachers to personalize learning.

Can teachers really do it all?

The Christensen Institute

Many teachers feel a need to go beyond their regular responsibilities to support and nurture their students. I’ve written previously about the heroic lengths we often expect teachers to bridge. Traditional classrooms were never designed to prepare all students for academic success nor to meet students’ social, emotional, and non-academic needs. Instead, schools were designed to train students for work in an industrial economy of the past.

A thorn in the side of education innovation

The Christensen Institute

Innovation is the key to real and lasting progress in education, but it isn’t easy to get right. In principle, innovation allows schools to push past time and resource constraints so teachers can accomplish more with their students. Many “innovations” have neutral or negative effects on student learning when the hassle of getting them to work outweighs the incremental benefits they offer. Two obstacles for blended-learning hybrids.

Through our research over the past few years, we’ve seen schools around the world adopt technology to amplify the impact of teachers and make learning more student-centered. Increasingly, we also see schools experimenting with staffing arrangements—essentially, how adults are being utilized in the classroom—in an effort to further magnify personalized learning.
