The Christensen Institute

On Monday, I had the opportunity to take part in a spirited debate about blended learning at the iNACOL Symposium in Orlando. The debate focused on blended-learning research and what it tells us about blended learning’s effectiveness. Below is my take on how we should interrogate the efficacy of blended learning in a manner that actually helps practitioners solve their most acute problems. Does blended learning work?

Two reasons why teachers don’t automate their work

The Christensen Institute

If you’re a teacher, just consider how nice it would be to have more time for collaborating with colleagues, differentiating your instruction, planning engaging projects, building relationships with students, or bringing field and industry experts into your classroom. For example, platforms delivering instructional videos might not give teachers practical ways to check students’ engagement and understanding.

Beyond Technology: Blended Learning Conference Debates Equity, Cultural Inclusion

Edsurge

For a conference named after “blended learning,” many attendees were surprised to learn that they did not agree on what the term meant. Dr. Dallas Dance, Superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools, was among the first to raise this during a session at the 6th Annual Blended Learning Conference , held last weekend in Rhode Island. “I I was talking to a colleague who was using blended and personalized learning the same way,” says Dance.

The best new blended resource for teachers

The Christensen Institute

Although our resources are fantastic for giving district and school leadership teams a set of theory-based frameworks for planning and implementing a blended-learning program, we don’t have much to offer individual teachers in terms of practical strategies to help them run a blended classroom on a daily basis. As I browsed through the content for these modules, I was struck by how well they were designed to address blended learning from a teacher’s perspective.

Does proposed federal policy leave room for disruptive innovation?

The Christensen Institute

Looking at the current version of the legislation, there are three key trends to keep in mind: (1) Sustaining innovations in classrooms and schools. Encouragingly, the current ESSA draft mentions blended learning as one such innovation, if schools manage to effectively integrate technology into their instructional core. Online learning is penetrating school systems nationwide by providing course options and learning experiences where students lack any alternative.

Why a K-12 Operating System is the Next Step in the Evolution of Edtech

Edsurge

Yes, this was before Google Classroom existed!) Little did I know this experience would eventually propel me to help develop a school operating system that tackles technology issues plaguing educators and supports them with more opportunities to offer individualized instruction. I was so green at this point in my career that I probably assumed every classroom in the 21st century operated this way. They bought a learning management system (LMS) and asked us to start using it.

Finding Balance in Today's Classroom

A Principal's Reflections

Maybe the 45-minute commute had a little to do with it, but the main culprit was how I used available time in the classroom. Since I was not very open to risks and convinced that the most critical aspect of my job was to get through the curriculum, my sole focus was on direct instruction.

A thorn in the side of education innovation

The Christensen Institute

Many “innovations” have neutral or negative effects on student learning when the hassle of getting them to work outweighs the incremental benefits they offer. Take, for example, interactive whiteboards, classroom tablets, or table-top touchscreens. But do these “innovations” actually expand a school’s ability to meet the learning needs of its students? But all too often, schools use devices in ways that have only small, marginal benefits for student learning.
