Asking the Right Questions About Mobile Learning

A Principal's Reflections

As of late I have been engaged in a great amount of work either assisting districts and schools as they begin to implement mobile learning ( 1:1, BYOD ) or helping them get their programs on track. Thus, many lessons were learned the hard way. The success of mobile learning relies on proper planning, reflection, and evaluation to improve. Have you developed a strategic plan to ensure the initiative will positively impact student learning ?

Self actuated mobile learning

Learning with 'e's

This is a continuation of my short series of blog posts on mobile learning. In previous posts I have argued that mobile learning is increasingly popular as an informal activity, and that personalisation of learning is an important characteristic of smart phone use. We are a now mobile, itinerant society where tethered computing is becoming increasingly anachronistic. Self actuation is all about having control over your own learning.

Video communication apps and mobile learning

Nik Peachey

One of the great things about mobile devices such as tablets, iPads and phones is that most modern devices have good quality cameras and microphones built in. Mailvu also provides mobile apps for iOS, Android an Blackberry. A Practical Way to Increase Access to Mobile Technology Regardless of Age

A Principal's Reflections

We still have a long way to go in many places, but the increase in access provides kids with an array of innovative learning opportunities that continue to evolve. However, if a well-designed assessment is in place, then the natural course of action is to allow learners to select the best tool for the task. Even though the cost of mobile devices has gone down, considerable purchasing challenges persist. For more mobile learning resources check out this Pinterest board.

How—and Why—We Can Improve the Future of Mobile Learning

Edsurge

When Massive Open Online Courses (or MOOCs) were first introduced, people quickly realized these platforms could help students learn more effectively at their own pace on their own schedule. This development, combined with tremendous growth in mobile device usage due to improved technology, naturally led to a shift in mobile learning patterns. Despite this promising beginning, the role of mobile devices in the classroom and in education overall is still rather limited.

Advancing Mobile Phones as Learning Devices

A Principal's Reflections

This morning I read a great article on PBS Media Shift by Audrey Watters entitled " Why Schools Should Stop Banning Cell Phones, and Use Them For Learning." Fortunately for me I have already begun to work with my staff and students to transform the teaching and learning culture at New Milford HS as it pertains to cell phones as mobile learning devices. By the end of last school year many more teachers were incorporating mobile learning devices into their instruction.

Evaluating authentic mobile apps for learning

Nik Peachey

I particularly encouraged them to think about 'authentic' apps rather than those made for learning. This is because in many ways I feel that most made for learning apps have made very little pedagogical progress beyond their roots in CALL from the last century. Check out my ebook As a result of that workshop and the research that developed from it I've now developed this list of criteria for evaluating mobile apps for educational purposes.

Considering Home Learning When Doing Mobile

Education with Technology

Many schools are going mobile or one-to-one. Schools sometimes make decisions without thinking about the full consequences such as mobile and home learning. If schools supply mobile devices to the students, do the students take the mobile devices home? If students do not take the mobile device home, then mobile is only considered an in-school learning tool. Teachers cannot assign at home mobile work. Students can not learn 24/7.

The Drivers of a Successful BYOD Initiative

A Principal's Reflections

As devices have become more affordable over the years, parents have bestowed a variety of mobile technologies upon their children. The potential is there for schools and educators to empower students to take more ownership of their learning. The overall goal of any BYOD initiative should be to support and enhance student learning. A rash decision is made to go BYOD without a sound rationale for how it will impact student learning.

Stop asking whether laptops improve learning outcomes

eSchool News

But really, the question is superficial and shows a limited understanding of what is needed to enhance teaching and learning using technology. Introducing laptops while not changing the teaching and learning paradigm is of little use, and may even produce negative academic outcomes. Simply having students using laptops for learning is not enough. It is the type of activities that are being used and the depth of learning that occurs that is important.

World Language Students Use of Mobile Devices in the Classroom

Education with Technology

Students can use laptops and mobile devices to hear authentic language, read authentic texts, read tweets about famous performers, see up-to-the-moment culture, watch video clips, see tv shows, and communicate with native speakers (Tuttle, 2013). Teachers can help students select those learning activities appropriate to their language level. Often these mobile activities have built in context to help the students understand the language.
