Shifts and Issues Associated With The Common Core

A Principal's Reflections

I attended another session on the Common Core State Standards today at the 2012 ASCD Annual Conference entitled Educator Readiness for the Common Core: ASCD Findings from Select States. Their number one concern is the technological capacity to teach and assess students. Compounding this issue is the fact that t here is no money to purchase what is needed to meet the expectations that will come along with these assessments.

Common Core Connections: Using Multimedia to Present Knowledge & Ideas

Cool Tools for 21st Century Learners

Technology can be a powerful tool to help us meet the Common Core Standards and move our students forward to prepare them for success in school and beyond. How a blended program can change Common Core math

eSchool News

In the past few years, the Common Core has significantly altered the landscape in terms of mathematics education. The Common Core has also required more coherence in our curriculum. Our students are encouraged and expected to work in pairs and small groups as they engage in math problems that build a deep conceptual understanding instead of basic memorization of algorithms. One district looks at the changes a new blended math program for K-5 has brought.

Nevada to Recoup $1.8M From Common-Core Group Over Testing Mishaps

Marketplace K-12

Nevada officials announced Tuesday that a common-core assessment consortium will credit the state $1.8 million as compensation for problems that derailed a spate of its assessments last year. The state’s attorney general, Adam Paul Laxalt, said the accord is part of a pre-litigation settlement with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, which Nevada joined in 2010 to work together on developing tests. More than five years after adopting Common Core, Kentucky’s black-white achievement gap is widening

The Hechinger Report

Tier-3” kids, such as the dolphins, are those not meeting expectations on in-class tests, and Bowling was working to catch them up. It’s been over five years since Kentucky adopted the Common Core, guidelines for what students need to know in math and the English language arts in each grade. Related: Common Core ignores underprivileged students — and testing will lead to more achievement gaps. Closing these gaps was one of the goals of Common Core reform.

Oregon’s Scores Flat in Second Year of Common Core Testing

Students in Oregon performed approximately the same as they did last year on end-of-year reading, writing, and math performance assessments, although there was a modicum of improvement in some elementary school grades and possibly a small improvement in the achievement by high school juniors. Oregon adopted the Common Core standards in the 2014-2015 school year to help Oregon students to increase their achievement.

Common Core and Service Learning PBL Professional Development

Yesterday I had the privilege of facilitating a Common Core and Project Based Learning professional development class for 7th-12th grade teachers. Prior to my training, they had two days of ELA Common Core and one day of deconstructing performance assessments for ELA Common Core. I knew that what I had prepared for them would not meet their needs since I had created it as an introduction to PBL.

“It’s unfair” special education students lag behind under Common Core in Kentucky

The Hechinger Report

Since Kentucky became the first state to adopt the Common Core in 2010, the achievement gap between students with disabilities and their nondisabled peers has widened slightly – despite sweeping expectations the more rigorous standards would help eliminate disparities in academic performance. But to expect that the Common Core – or any standards – alone will move the needle is overreaching, he said.

Measuring Up–the Key to Meeting State/National Standards

Ask a Tech Teacher

Many of us find students benefit greatly when the school employs curriculum-based assessments to measure progress. Because by teaching, assessing knowledge, tracking progress, and personalizing to student needs, we can determine if students are accomplishing what they must to complete the work of learning. This is done through its standards-aligned assessment library or teacher-created assessments developed from a bank of over 60,000 standards-specific questions.

Closing gap for immigrant students under Common Core in Kentucky is a moving target

The Hechinger Report

Strong language skills are key as part of the state’s Common Core standards. Yet it’s hard to determine from looking at the state’s testing data how successful schools have been in closing the achievement gap between these students and their peers since Common Core was implemented. Unlike groups based on race or disability or other factors, English learners are, by definition, a transient group.

6 reasons it’s important to create your own online assessments

eSchool News

Homegrown online assessments prove invaluable to one district. Assessments are critical to our efforts to improve instruction in K-12 education. Yet, in an age when students are accessing a vast array of resources on computers, tablets, and mobile devices, some school districts are still hesitant to take their assessments online. At Hopewell Valley Regional School District (HVRSD), we began the transition to online assessment more than three years ago.

Working in groups, students research opposite sides of an issue, then debate it in front of class. As they work, students “…construct viable arguments and critique reasoning of others…” More specifically (Common Core Appendix C): introduce claim. Additionally, student groups are expected to: develop three reasons for and three against the topic, and how to refute each. Once resources have been collected, present to the group for discussion.

Fun Assessment for Silent Sustained Reading

Catlin Tucker

The challenge for me was to design an “assessment” that was meaningful. I had tried everything from the traditional book report style assessment to more creative movie trailers, but I didn’t feel like they accomplished what I wanted from a silent sustained reading assessment. It wasn’t until I went to a book club meeting with some friends that inspiration struck. Why couldn’t our SSR assessment be more like that?

Curriculum Design is Emotional Work—This Teacher Makes It Easier

standards-based) school for at-risk youth, pre-packaged curriculum and assessments offered very little flexibility for personalization or modification. The content was prescriptive and standardized, which meant taking it apart to meet student needs sometimes took longer than just making it myself. Despite the immense amount of work involved, my colleagues and I fine-tuned our curriculum every year based on student skill gaps and results from formative assessments.

How Design Thinking Builds Empathy, Gives Purpose and Honors Educators

Students start their own business in which they must determine what product to sell, where to house their storefront in a fictitious town, how to advertise to attract customers, manage a budget, and assess their business’s success. Our students are making in so many different capacities and our teachers must be able to plan, facilitate, and assess this process to ensure that they are learning and meeting benchmarks.

May this Gobstopper (Now Called Curriculet) be Ever Lasting!

Baker's B.Y.O.D.

While I''ve written quite a bit about assessing writing (ad nauseum) via digital means, reading instruction and assessment have remained a primarily paper-based enterprise in my class. Questions, annotations, and quizzes can be loaded anywhere in the text and the teacher can choose to have the corresponding excerpt highlighted as well as select the appropriate Common Core Curriculum Reading Standard for each question.

ePortfolios are powerful tools for authentic assessment because they require teachers and students to dig deeper than a multiple choice test. As we scramble to fully implement the Common Core Standards, ePortfolios can be an extremely useful tool to help students develop skills necessary for success in school and beyond. I have been an advocate for using ePortfolios for authentic assessment for quite some time.

Standards Based Grading & Learning

Baker's B.Y.O.D.

After connecting at #flipcon15 with Hassan and Amanda , I was invited to join the SBL Mini PLN Voxer group to discuss all things related to standards-based learning/grading as I contemplate making the shift from traditional grades to the SGB model. How can educators accurately assess and symbolize student performance? The SBL Mini PLN Voxer group discussed some of these issues in a Google Hangout today.

How Should Learning Be Assessed?

This is the second of a two-part conversation with Yong Zhao about standards, testing and other core elements of the modern system of education, and the assumptions that may be standing in the way of meeting the real learning needs of all children. Tests are just one form of assessment, he points out, and limited in what they can accurately measure. More helpful still are explicit written assessments that describe an individual’s progress. iStock.

Student Learners become Leaders of Learning – a LeRoy Finkel Fellowship Follow-up

While these students had worked for an entire school year with positive improvement in reading, writing, and math skills, the knowledge was not transferring to the technology-based state assessments. In order to provide needed support for struggling readers, smaller groupings for 4th and 5th grade students during Response to Intervention were needed. Perhaps we could meet the needs of both groups of students during our daily RTI time block?

AdvancED to Merge With Assessment Maker, Measured Progress to Form $120M Nonprofit

Two national education nonprofits whose school improvement and assessment tools impact millions of students across the country are merging. The new group doesn’t yet have a name, and the deal won’t be finalized until closer to the end of the year. What AdvancED has so far lacked, according to Elgart, are assessment tools that “provide a link between school quality measures and student outcomes.”
