Social Media in Education

A Principal's Reflections

My answers to Bill''s questions provide a snapshot of my social media in education journey. What made you interested in using social media to reach out to your school community? In early March of 2009, I was reading my local newspaper, The Staten Island Advance, and came across an article on Twitter. As I read the article I learned more about Twitter and its capabilities. For me, Twitter opened the door to the world of social media.

Why Twitter Will Never Connect All Educators.

My Island View

If today’s learner has a need to learn something that has meaning to him/her, he/she can access information and tools to curate, communicate, collaborate and create without any help from someone standing at the head of the class. It is the social learning we talk about. The ability to create and access these sources is all part of a growth mindset for learning in the 21 st Century. This takes time and is not a product of a workshop, or a daylong PD event.

Connecting 2 the World

Overall, NBC, the American television corporation with rights to broadcasting the Olympics, with one exception, has done a pretty good job of covering the games on its free, open access station. However, they have really missed the boat on their social media/online coverage, which could have real repercussions from fans in the future. Soon, only certain events were available for viewing. Only events in which American won were shown. One exception is twitter.
