Today, Top Hat announced it has reached an agreement to acquire more than 400 higher education textbooks from Nelson, one of the biggest educational publishers in Canada. Top Hat is “partially becoming a publisher—the thing that they’ve long wanted to compete with,” observes Phil Hill, an education industry analyst and consultant.

The biggest education company in the world is moving away from a production model that has been one of the main drivers in the rising cost of textbooks. And focusing on digital makes the secondary textbook market even less attractive, since students have to buy access directly from Pearson to get course materials.
