School absenteeism has been one of the small but chronic problems in the past. Since the pandemic, it is so much more, to the point it is a front-of-mind issue that schools scramble to address. Here’s a good discussion from the US Department of Education on the problem and solutions:

I’m glad that we’re at least trying to address this finally.
That is a tough one. Kids learned to stay home during the pandemic and going to school with all the anxiety that may entail may not be easy for some. If it spreads and becomes the norm it will be very difficult to fix. I am glad they are addressing it.
I know from our school district, there is a real problem with how attendence codes are used and are depicting a more dire situation that really isn’t there. I would go back to data integrity and confirm that is being done accurately before making any conclusions.
