The decline has accelerated, and results from the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) have pushed the state into the “learn-from-our-mistakes” category. In 2010, the Commonwealth ditched English and math standards that were a model for other states in favor of weaker national standards known as the Common Core.

The schools were recently in the news for their relatively strong performance on what’s known as the Nation’s Report Card, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Although most states and jurisdictions lost ground since 2019 in fourth and eighth grade math and reading on the NAEP, DoDEA schools did relatively well.
