In conversations with edtech investors, some reported that the K-12 market has seen an influx of instructional content, particularly in the form of open educational resources (OERs). OERs are openly-licensed educational materials that can be downloaded, modified and shared with others to help support student learning.

Some common 21st-century skills include critical thinking, creativity, digital literacy, technology literacy, information literacy and self-direction. With digital textbooks, students learn how to use technology responsibly and pull information from a variety of digital sources. Digital textbooks don’t present the same problem.

Smartphones, tablets, and laptops had become a permanent requirement along with using technology in the classrooms by this time. The State appropriations per full-time student have fallen from an inflation-adjusted $8,489 in 2007 to $7,642 in 2017. On the other hand, per-student tuition revenue has increased by 96%.

In the second eye-raising deal for the higher-ed publishing industry in as many weeks, Wiley, a major textbook publisher, has agreed to acquire the assets of Knewton, a provider of digital courseware and adaptive-learning technologies. And around 2017, publishers including Pearson that once used Knewton began to pull back.
