My Noms for the 2013 Edublog Awards

Best open PD / unconference / webinar series- Edcamp ! It''s Edublog awards time! The 10th Annual Edublog awards are once again a reminder to the districts of the power of the Capitol, and how they must never rebel against their country again. Oh wait, that''s The Hunger Games. They are on my mind this weekend for some reason. The Edublog awards are an effort to "promote and demonstrate the educational value of social media," particularly as some school districts block blogs and Twitter.

2 Unconferences in 2 Days: EdCamp Honolulu and EdCampOnline -- Part 1 of 2

mauilibrarian2 in Olinda

I hadn''t ever been to an EdCamp before, so to attend two in two days was quite amazing. One event was in person, the other was online (a first not only for me, but for edcamps!). So this is Part I: mainly about the resources I gathered at EdCamp Honolulu , October 19, 2013. Part II will be about EdCamp Online. ? ? ? ? ? What is an EdCamp? Also known as "unconferences", EdCamps have been springing up across the country.

What EdCamps Are All About

Comfortably 2.0

I could go on and on about the benefits of attending an Edcamp and how amazing it is to sit in sessions with like minded educators discussing their passions, but I won''t. What I will do is offer you some insight from one of my former high school teachers that attended an Edcamp this Year two of #edcampcentralNE is in the books. Another great day of collaboration, conversations and sharing.

Connected Educator Month. What You Need To Know #CE13

The Web20Classroom

Running an Edcamp in your area? "Alone we are smart but together we are brilliant." October has been declared by the U.S. Department of Education to be Connected Educator Month. Started in 2012, an entire month of webinars, blog posts, ideas, discussions and more are dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of educators to get connected.

5 Leadership Questions To Finish (And Start) The School Year With

The Web20Classroom

Are they going to conferences or Edcamps to expand their horizons or see what conversations teachers are having? In many places, the end of the school year is upon us. Students are eagerly waiting for that final bell to ring, and teachers are busy making those final preparations to finish things out. And while our thoughts may turn to summer vacation, this time of year is ripe for reflection, especially for the school-technology leader.

What Constitutes Good PD?

A Principal's Reflections

Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) Personal Learning Networks (PLN’s) Professional Growth Periods (PGP’s) Edcamps (For an introduction to Edcamp click HERE ) Edscape - Saturday October 19, 2013 at New Milford HS (NJ) In this day and age we must take control of our own learning if organizations are not providing and/or supporting meaningful PD opportunities. We can all agree that professional development is essential in any profession, especially education.

The Art of Storytelling

A Principal's Reflections

Encourage colleagues to attend and participate in Edcamps or Twitter chats. I decided to hold back (for now) on a rant that has been brewing for the past two days and instead have decided to take a more constructive approach on my blog. A great debate that has emerged over social media channels has been how we honor and acknowledge our educators and others in the profession.

#EdcampHOME is Where the Heart is. for Learning

Baker's B.Y.O.D.

I remember attending my first Edcamp in November and being awed by the session board: its masking taped grid on a cement block school wall and the giant post it notes used for session creation; the organizers on laptops furiously copying the schedule to a Google spreadsheet. edcamp #edtech collaboration edcamp gobstopper Google EdcampHOME demonstrated the power of organized mulitple Google Hangouts and educators'' desire to learn.

Why Every Conference Should Be A Connected Conference-#ASCD13

The Web20Classroom

I''ve spent the last several days attending the 2013 ASCD Annual Conference in Chicago. So in the span of 10 minutes we created #EdcampRogue , an impromptu session where we would gather, talk about the Edcamp Model of PD and how educators can get connected. Educators from across the country and across the globe gathered to discuss pressing educational issues and talk about how we can all make teaching and learning better for kids, no matter where they are.

I had even more fun picking my favorites this year than last. I hope you find new people on this list who will inspire you , as they have inspired me. #EdCampOnline Experience 10-26-13 #ce13

EdTechSandyK

Yesterday I had the exciting opportunity to participate in the first ever EdCamp to be held online. If you are not familiar with EdCamps, they differ from traditional professional development experiences in that they are organized by the participants on the day of the event. I have watched many EdCamps from afar by following their hashtags on Twitter while they are taking place, but have never had the opportunity to participate in one in person myself.

You may have been inspired to begin an EdCamp , undertake a 1:1 initiative, a BYOD system to your district, expand your PLN or whatever it is… make a list of what to do, make a plan and make it public. This can be done via Google Hangouts, via Twitter chats; via unconferences, such as EdCamps; via blogs or in person, of course. Photo by Larry S. Anderson ISTE''s Annual Conference is very simply the Mecca of EdTech learning.

Tech class: It is not about the tech

My Paperless Classroom

The Favorite game -This is a game I adapted from an edcamp session. At my school this is the first year we are using iPads in k-5th grade. As part of this process we have been training the teacher in using iPads in class and we are taking a more integrated approach to tech in the classes. As the tech integration specialist, I am planning with the teachers and shaping the tech curriculum to support the learning and the projects they are working on.

#NYSCATE13 - A Conference that Knows How to Make IT Happen!

The Innovative Educator

Some nail it like EdCamps and EduCon , and others leave something to be desired. I've attended a lot of conferences. When it comes to throwing a worthwhile conference, NYSCATE is one that knows how to make it happen. I had the privilege to meet and canoodle with innovative educators at this year’s NYSCATE in Rochester and here are a few of my favorite things about what this conference did right. How NYSCATE Makes IT Happen!

Finally, their voice is never considered through surveys, honest talks, casual hallway conversations, let alone “vote with your feet” systems certain edCamp revolutionaries are instilling. Is this what you think of when you hear the word PD? Image courtesy of Cheryl Colan , extracted from Flickr CC BY-NC 2.0 Professional development (PD) is one for those things you either love or hate. A lot of those feelings are directly affected by how it is planned for and delivered.

People naturally resist change for a variety of reasons: fear of the unknown, complacency in their comfort zone, fear of failure and a number of other reasons.
