Besides the outdoors, both of my grandfathers had an interest in making things in a world that had yet to experience the types of disruptive changes that we are now seeing thanks to the exponential evolution of technology. The connections above to the maker movement are indiscernible. It was the late 1970’s and 1980’s after all.

Self-directed learning, the Maker Movement, mobile learning, education technology integration and more are all relatively new, and have a variety of perspectives that can be taken in examining them and what they enable or change. Models like these embed certain (new?) ideas in certain contexts.

The Whitby School , in Greenwich, CT, uses MakerBot Replicator 3D Printers in the school’s Design Technology classroom to spark an interest in 3D printing and teach problem solving and design thinking. MakerBot Replicator 3D Printers are used in more than 5,000 schools throughout the U.S. MakerBot , a subsidiary of Stratasys Ltd.
