The pie charts below were produced in January by the National Student Clearinghouse, a nonprofit organization that provides data reporting services to colleges. Earlier this year, the organization launched a DEI Data Lab site to put a spotlight on how college enrollment, persistence and completion vary by race and ethnicity.

The first act followed the Great Recession of 2008, as schools added back staff that they had been forced to cut in the economic downturn. Not every school has increased staffing levels, according to Roza, but she says it’s a widespread national trend. It could be years before complete national data is available, Roza said.

User Generated Education

GPT models are trained on large amounts of text data and are able to generate natural language text that is coherent and grammatically correct. However, if the text is more familiar to the bot — because it’s been trained on such data — then it will have low complexity and therefore is more likely to be AI-generated.

During the decade following the Great Recession of 2008, the number of humanities bachelor’s degree recipients fell by a whopping 14 percent — from a peak of about 236,000. The humanities field has not recovered from that free fall, recently published data from the National Center for Education Statistics show.
