Exploring medical technologies

Learning with 'e's

One of my earliest jobs back in the 1980s was managing the educational technology and learning resources for several nurse education centres across the South West of England. During this time I also worked closely with several leading NHS surgeons and physicians as they developed new techniques and explored new technologies. It was fascinating exploring these new technologies, and we all learnt a lot in those pioneering years.

Is sharing caring? #OpenBlog19

Learning with 'e's

I attended an event in Utrecht, in the Netherlands way back in 2007, at around the time that social media was emerging as a serious learning technology. Together for two days, we discussed how digital technologies and networks could support learning. Suddenly, most of the South American continent had access to my work, and the link back to my blog include, ensured an increased visitor count.

Theories for the digital age: Paragogy

Learning with 'e's

They show that never before has access to information and people been so easy and so widespread, and that we make connections with people who can help us manage, organize, disseminate and make sense of the resources. The user generated content currently available on the web has been criticised for its inconsistent quality (Carr, 2010) and its potential to encourage plagiarism, piracy and a host of other nefarious practices (Keen, 2007).

Education Technology and the Power of Platforms

Hack Education

I’ll look in more details at the insecurity of education data in the next article in the series – but recognize, this is one of the grave problems with digital technologies currently, whether they’re platforms or not: they rely on data as the central element of their business model – extracting data, controlling data, selling data… and far too often losing data during security breaches. Are any education technologies, for that matter?

The changing Web

Learning with 'e's

Social media - often referred to as Web 2.0 , or the participatory Web - is shaping up to be one of the most important tool sets available to support the promotion of change in education. Almost everyone, it seems, is using some element of social media in the planning, development, delivery, management or evaluation of teaching and learning. Debate focuses on whether the emerging social applications constitute a sea change or revolution in the Web (cf.

A hidden, public internet asset that could get more kids online for learning

The Hechinger Report

This asset was handed to [school districts and educational nonprofits] with the expectation that they deliver educational and social value in return. Leverenz and other critics have singled out two educational nonprofits — Mobile Beacon and Mobile Citizen — both of which rake in millions of dollars a year from their national holdings of EBS licenses, while using just a fraction of the revenue to supply much-needed broadband access to students.

Launching SchoolLibraryNJ (and some models beyond)

We’re exited to launch SchoolLibraryNJ , a evolving project designed to address inequitable access to resources for K12 schools and libraries and to present the value of librarians in digitally curating resources for teaching and learning. 2007).

6 Ways to Stretch Your School or District Technology Budget

The 21st Century Principal

Technology budgets are not likely to escape the knife either, but if we want to maintain being 21st century leaders in our schools, we need to find ways to get the most out of our technology dollars. Too often, administrators turn to cutting support staff and new technology purchases. Cutting new technology purchases also can hamper innovation and experimentation. Here’s my six suggestions for stretching your district or school technology funds.

We need strategies for personalizing and enriching the remote learning experience. And it is clear that the library must be the center of that experience. Currently, one very popular strategy is the creation of classroom scenes using Google Slides populated with their flexible Bitmojis.

Education Technology and 'Fake News'

Hack Education

This is part one of my annual look at the year’s “ top ed-tech stories ” Last year, I started this series – my annual review of the year in education technology – with an article on wishful thinking. But I wanted to consider too why the stories we repeatedly tell about education and education technology were so fanciful – stories about impending disruptions and revolutions and robot teachers and brain zappers and so on.

The Politics of Education Technology

Hack Education

” I mean, yes, I’m totally making up the framing of the “trends” angle here (in the hopes, I confess, to defanging all those ridiculous clickbait articles that just list a bunch of shiny new consumer technology products and predict that they’re poised to “revolutionize school”). The business of education technology overlaps with the politics of ed-tech. There is No Technology Industry (There is Only Ideology). Technology is a system.

Education Technology and the Year of Wishful Thinking

Hack Education

I want to start this year’s review of education technology acknowledging grief. I want to start this year’s review of education technology sanctioning, if such a thing is necessary, our mourning. In a society that considers itself highly rational, highly technological, highly scientific, to call something “magical” often serves to dismiss or diminish it – or to dismiss or diminish those who do not sufficiently understand science or tech.

Free Lesson Plans and Other Resources to Prevent Cyberbullying and Promote Online Safety

“We live in a world today where everything we do can be tracked,” says Shannon Bischoff, Technology Facilitator at Toledo Public Schools in Ohio. Those of us creating, working in, and teaching technology are greatly concerned about how we can help make the internet a safer and better place for all—especially children and young people. One in three young people have experienced online threats, a rate that has nearly doubled from 2007 to 2016.

What a great lesson for students to learn about the power of the internet, social media, and one person. Which brings up a bigger issue: It requires access to lots of my personal accounts to make these recipes happen.

The Scientific Debate Over Teens, Screens And Mental Health

MindShift

One hypothesis that has gotten a lot of traction is that with nearly every teen using a smartphone these days, digital media must take some of the blame for worsening mental health. “So we have to go on the data that we have — which is obviously not going to be a true experiment — but it adds up to a lot of evidence pointing toward technology possibly playing a role in this increase in mental health issues.” “Social media invites comparison,” Twenge says.

Dear ISTE (reprised)

NeverEndingSearch

The organization acknowledges the accelerated pace of change and is entering the process of seeing what works, what is still relevant, what is obsolete, what is still missing since the last refresh in 2007. At the event, Carolyn Sykora , Senior Director of the ISTE Standards Program, shared that the 1998 standards described a landscape in which we were learning to use technology. The 2007 standards described a landscape in which we were using technology to learn.

Are we more intelligent?

Learning with 'e's

This is part 2 of the series on technological futures. When discussing the future, especially the future of technology, there are some writers who almost always seem to be quoted. Near the top of the list is the futurologist Ray Kurzweil , who has much to say about our technological future, and also about the growth in human intelligence. This will occur, Kurzweil argues, due to a rapid advance of technology and proliferation of human and machine intelligence.

Edsurge

This article is part of a series of reflections on the past decade in education technology. EdSurge : What technology has been the most disappointing? What technology has actually delivered on its potential and promise? The smartphone, without question, has exceeded all expectations since its release in 2007. I find classrooms and after-school programs that focus on a cluster of digital media skills to be quite remarkable. Education Technology Technology Trend

The survival of higher education (3): The Social Web

Below are four reasons why the Social Web and associated media are changing higher education. Although this is not the entire story, I believe we will need to adopt these and other new technology mediated approaches widely if we wish to secure the future of higher education. Theories for the digital age: Self regulated learning

Learning with 'e's

One challenge for education providers is to decide whether they will support the desire of students to self regulate their learning activities using personal technologies. Those who do support BYOD for students and staff will need to invest significant time and resources into ensuring cross platform operability and seamless delivery to students’ personal technologies. A number of collaborative and social networking tools regularly play a role within the average student PLE.

Jim described it as a way to think through technology in order to empower the educational community beyond tech skills and training. He cited Jon Udell ‘s vision of Wikipedia as a place where knowledge is socially constructed. But other departments already provide the backbone (internet connectivity, access to hardware, etc) and can afford – even desire – to let Domain projects go on. Users had to learn a galaxy of technologies (DNS, FTP, etc).
