Startups and established tech companies are providing a crash course in entrepreneurship, sending engineers and designers into public schools to mentor students. Some companies already encourage their employees to mentor young people through formal or informal programs.

These tools help us identify and then address -- through intervention or enrichment -- individual students' needs around each of the major academic standards. A recent study within a number of school districts, including the Middletown City School District, showed significantly greater academic growth in blended learning versus traditional classes. But in recent years, we've seen a spike in the number of smaller, tightly focused, niche edtech product companies.
