Join Us For the filmMAKER Challenge Webinar Series

January 24, 2017 | By

The Digital Promise filmMAKER™ Challenge is an opportunity for middle and high school students to learn about product design and filmmaking through a set of activities, projects, and challenges. These experiences culminate in a final project: redesigning an everyday object and creating a documentary video that tells the story of the process.

To help teachers lead this challenge with their students, Digital Promise has scheduled a series of webinars with experts in design education and film production. In the first webinar, Emma Scripps (IDEO, Teachers’ Guild) and Jess Lura (Bullis Charter School) gave advice on using specific tools and routines that can help you navigate this uncertainty.

Starting a new project with students can be daunting. In some ways, it can feel like a trust fall: hoping that your students will embrace the new project while empowering them with the agency to determine where, exactly, they will take it. How can you help students plan their projects while giving them enough room to make and learn from their mistakes? How can you help students collaborate without micromanaging their teams?

For teachers following the filmMAKER project guide with their students, this webinar is designed to coincide with Part One: Collaborating and Looking Closely. We hope you find this video archive of that webinar insightful and that you might join us for future webinars listed below. You can also sign up for the filmMAKER Challenge here.

Upcoming Webinars:

Learning to Love Testing Your Ideas – Thurs., January 26 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT
Amon Milner, Olin College
One of the biggest shifts toward maker-centered learning happens when students stop asking the teacher to validate their ideas and instead test their ideas directly. Learn about how to help your students prototype and test their own work in the second webinar of our series.

Documentary Tips – Wed., February 1 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT
Dimitri Moore, Digital Promise
Students are immersed in digital media all the time — but they do not necessarily know how to produce it effectively. Learn how to help students use video not just to record their process, but to tell their story in the third filmMAKER webinar.

Human-centered Design – Tues., February 7 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT
Susie Wise, Stanford d.school
Making things can be a powerful way to learn. Making things that other people use and care about is even better. Learn about human-centered design in the fourth filmMAKER webinar.

Product Design – Wed., February 22 at 3:30pm ET / 12:30pm PT
Carla Diana, University of Pennsylvania School of Design
As students approach the end of the filmMAKER project, some may become frustrated at the gap between ambitious goals and their limitations as beginners. Learn how to help students complete work that is great — and, more importantly, that they feel great about too.
