Collaborative & Creative Online Learning

Teacher Reboot Camp

Check out your VLE and see what tools and features already support collaboration and creativity. Does your VLE have forums, offer badges, or allow you to embed? If you are deciding on a VLE, consider the following. It is frustrating to only have a Learning Management System (LMS) or VLE accessible only when you are on campus. You, your students and their parents should be able to access the VLE outside of school. Post digital writing prompts to get students actively writing in your VLE. Flipping Instruction for Struggling Students

Embed videos on a virtual learning environment (VLE), a space on the web and also accessible on mobile devices, where students access the lessons or videos. 11 Tips for Engaging Parents

Teacher Reboot Camp

Have a VLE or LMS where students and parents can check grades, homework, see student work, be notified of important notices, and find important information. Your virtual learning environment (VLE) should be easy to navigate, user-friendly, able to be translated, make good use of visuals and multimedia, mobile-friendly, protect the information and privacy of users, and provide necessary support and materials (possibly tutorials). “At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.” – Jane D. Punk learning

Learning with 'e's

For some time, educators have been subverting established methods and turning their backs on institutional tools and technologies such as the managed learning environment (also known as LMS or VLE). By 1977, punk music had emerged as a creative force to be reckoned with. It was a form of music that was furiously loud, aggressively energetic and full of discordant anger. Unported License.

We need to rethink university IT Services

Mark Smithers

There is little room for experimenting with tools beyond the VLE. Innovations and going beyond the VLE. As is often the case I’ve been spurred into action by a post from Martin Weller about IT services in universities. Specifically Martin describes these complaints about IT Services: Security is used rather the same way Governments use terrorism – as a means of controlling things and removing freedoms. Increasingly academics have no control over their machines, and cannot install or trial new software. Even basic tasks are often highly frustrating and time consuming.

Design for life

Learning with 'e's

The user interface on most VLE/LMS technologies is often too complex for students, who spend much more time trying to navigate and discover content than they do actually learning that content. This is number 30 in my series on learning theories. I''m working through the alphabet of psychologists and theorists, providing a brief overview of each theory, and how it can be applied in education.

Learning pathways

Learning with 'e's

The institutional learning platform - the VLE - is a classic case of decisions made about learning without consulting the learner. I recently heard a story about the building of a new university campus. Unusually, the architect hadn't designed any pedestrian paths into his plan. Better they create their own pathways', he said, 'than for me build them, and then for them not be used'.

I''m a big advocate of student publications. Many have some great ideas to share, and we encourage student blogging very strongly in Plymouth. There is nothing to stop students going farther and publishing their work in mainstream journals - if their work is good enough it should be shared widely. It''s also very motivating for them. Congratulations Lucy! Read the complete article at this link.

False frontiers

Learning with 'e's

You could see where we might place formal learning using a VLE, or where students might meet to chat using Facebook, for example. Collaboration is where two or more people work together to achieve a common objective. In education, the common objective is usually to learn specific content, skills or competencies within defined areas. It simply amplifies it. But it's far from perfect.

There was a serious underpinning philosophy, where students gain a personal space on the web which they can control, and which is the antithesis of the institutional VLE/LMS. None of this happens in an LMS (or VLE), in fact, that systematic design of that system is anathema to all of these crucial elements of educating in the digital era. It''s a mishmash of edtech, 80s pop culture, animated GIFs, retro toys, ds106 art, and all things cinema.
