The Parenting 2.0 Workshop - Helping You Become the Parent You Want to Be!

[Please distribute where you feel appropriate! This is a Steve Hargadon / Learning Revolution event.]

Hello, Devoted Parent!

Do you sometimes feel worried and discouraged, or maybe even helpless, hopeless, despairing, and defeated? Do you worry you might actually be "messing up" your child?!

We believe that being a parent is the hardest, but the most rewarding, thing we do in our lives. You can feel hope and confidence again as a parent, knowing that there is a good path forward and that you’re doing the best for your child.

In our work with parents, we find that almost everybody has at least one parenting challenge that they are anxious to solve. "Please just give me a tool to fix this problem I'm having..." is something we hear a lot! Our Parenting 2.0 Workshop is designed to help you build up your mental and emotional parenting "tool set" so that you feel more confident and capable of being the parent you want to be!

We hope you will consider joining us for this six-week online, video-conference program. You can attend the sessions live and interact with us and with others, or you can choose to just watch the recordings. Either way, we think you'll find that there are simple steps you can take to be a more confident and positive parent.

We look forward to helping you!

OVERVIEW:
"Parenting 2.0" is about parenting at a higher level. Most parents are doing a better job than they give themselves credit for, and a big part of our Parenting 2.0 workshop is helping you to recognize what you're already doing well, and then to strengthen and build on those things.

Parenting at a higher level also means gaining new perspectives on parenting, and we'll dive deeply into ways that small and simple changes in how we think can dramatically improve our happiness and our family life.

Finally, Parenting 2.0 also recognizes that we live in a new, connected, online and social world--and so do our children. We'll discuss the critical decisions and methods for parenting to create peace and fulfillment in our electronically-saturated era, which often produces the opposite of peace and fulfillment for most people.

OUTLINE:
  • Week 1: "YOUR PARENTING STORY"
We all have a "story" of what parenting is. We'll explore our own stories, the stories of our parents and significant others, and our cultural stories of parenting. Once you realize that you have a story, you begin to have some control over it. We'll explore the ways in which stories can be "broken" or harmful, how to repair or re-write them, and how this relates to "Parenting 2.0."
  • Week 2: "NAMASTE PARENTING"
The word "Namaste" is a customary Hindu greeting that has been popularized because it conveys something very significant. One translation is "the divine in me recognizes the divine in you." When we start with a core belief in the inherent worth and value of ourselves and our children, it helps us to see and act in ways that accomplish what we really want with our children.
  • Week 3: "THE SCIENCE OF (LITTLE) PEOPLE"
There is so much science about how we and our children learn and feel and act that can be really helpful to parenting. We'll talk about temperament, attachment, and attunement as core ways to understand our children and our relationships with them. We'll also explore how this can help us guide our children through their school and life experiences.
  • Week 4: "IT'S ACTUALLY ABOUT YOU"
This week we'll explore one of the hardest, but most rewarding, things we learn about parenting: that helping our children is more about changing ourselves than it is about changing them. We save this for week four because sometimes we're not ready to hear that until we've dug a little deeply and are comfortable being honest with ourselves. This session is a life-changer.
  • Week 5: "BUILDING CAPABLE PEOPLE"
What do we really want to accomplish as parents? What is our ultimate hope for our children? Is it to help our children navigate the world and to then become happy, healthy, and productive in their own lives? Being clear about our long-term goals helps us focus on the ways that we can accomplish them, facilitates building a culture in our families that is a lasting gift and legacy to our children, and helps them to craft their own family and parenting stories.
  • Week 6: "WORLD 2.0"
Just as television dramatically shifted the world of families and parenting for most of our own parents, we're experiencing even more monumental changes to our lives and our children's lives with the advent of the Internet, mobile devices, and social media. Our previous sessions provide us some grounding for having confidence that we can manage the many social and emotional challenges of "World 2.0," and help our children to learn how to self-manage, survive, and thrive in this new world.

I've published research in a national therapy journal and been invited to present research at two national conferences. I continually try to expand my understanding of how humans change, mostly through wrangling my toddler twins and picking the brain of my brilliant and beautiful wife. And, of course, through study, research, and practice. More at paulwpeterson.com.

Steve Hargadon: My wife and I are the parents of four now-grown children (the oldest of whom is married to Paul!) and the grandparents to four grandchildren.
