K-12 Dealmaking: Chinese Robotics Co. Raises $30M, and Ravenna Solutions Makes Acquisition

In this week’s dealmaking news, Education Brands acquired enrollment management software provider Ravenna Solutions; in addition, China-based STEM education and robotics startup Makeblock gained $30 million.

Education Brands Acquires Ravenna Solutions: Seattle-based Ravenna Solutions, a provider of enrollment management software to K-12 private schools, has been acquired by Education Brands, a family of education-focused software and services companies, according to a blog posting from Ravenna. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In a Q&A about the acquisition, Ravenna noted, “Joining forces with Education Brands means we can continue to focus on elevating admission and enrollment. At the same time, our partnership will allow us to expand and continue to be committed to open integration with other technology solutions.”

Education Brands companies include Diamond Mind, Senior Systems , TADS and others.

Makeblock Raises $30 Million: Makeblock, a STEM education and robotics startup, has closed a $30 million Series B round at a $200 million valuation led by Evolution Media China and Shenzhen Capital Group Co., Ltd., according to a statement from the company.

The funding supports Makeblock’s expansion into new markets, further product development and diversification of STEM education hardware, software and curriculum resources for educators, children and hobbyists, the company said.

Shenzhen, China-based Makeblock said it will expand its global footprint with new offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, North America, Japan, and the Netherlands.

Indian Tutoring Platform Raises Funds: Jaipur, India-based ed-tech startup Nactus has raised an undisclosed amount from a group of angel investors, according to press reports.

Investors included Sandeep Aggarwal, managing director at Nomura; Gautam Chhaochharia, head of India, research at UBS and R Balachandar, joint general manager, at ICICI Bank, according to reports.

Nactus is an Internet-based smart phone application that “provides a complete learning management platform where not only students can find quality tutors but also manage their classes on a daily basis,” according to the company.

School Specialty Partners With Listenwise: EPS Instruction and Intervention, a division of School Specialty, Inc., has formed a partnership with listening comprehension platform Listenwise, according to a statement.

EPS said it will add Listenwise Premium to its portfolio, which pairs curriculum-aligned listening content with learning tools and listening comprehension assessments, to its lineup of classroom literacy and intervention resources, according to the company.

School Speciality is a provider of thousands of products to school districts around the country, from furniture to products for arts classes to school security.
