EdTech Acronyms Explained


The amount of new acronyms in the educational technology world is staggering… and often overwhelming for educators.  In fact, this list will be up to date for a few hours and then more acronyms and terms will come along!  But have a look and get familiar with what they stand for:

1:1 –  One to one (usually talking about the ratio of devices in a class per child).

API – Application Programming Interface.

AUP – Acceptable Use Policy

BLearning – Blended Learning (using a range of multimedia and strategies).

BYOD – Bring Your Own Device.

BYOL – Bring Your Own Learning.

BYOT – Bring Your Own Technology.

CIPA – Children’s Internet Protection Act.

COPPA – Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

CMS – Content Management System (a tool to build websites and apps).

CREATE – Collaboartion, Resources, Educate, Apps, Technology, Enriching.

DOK – Depth Of Knowledge.

GAFE – Google Apps For Education (include Google Docs, Google Sites etc).

ICT – Information Communications Technology.

IT – Instructional Technology (the use of tech for instructional purposes).

IOT – Internet of Things (Connecting devices to a network i.e. lights, phones, TVs).

LMS – Learning Management System (software that runs and manages educational programs).

MLD – Mobile Learning Devices.

MLearning – Mobile Learning.

MOOC – Massively Open Online Course (an online course which has video lectures, problem solving activities, texts and an online community of fellow learners).

NGDLE – Next-generation Digital Learning Environment.

OER – Open Educational Resource (this can be any online materials that are free to use).

OSS – Open Source Software (programs online that are free to use).

OS – Operation system (e.g. Windows, Android).

PBL – Project Based Learning (click here for my guide).

PD – Professional Development.

PI – Pedagogical Innovators.

PLN – Personal Learning Network.

QR Code – Quick Response Code.

RED – Rapid e-learning Development.

SAMR – Subsitution, Augmentation, Modification, Reinvention (click for my article).

SIS – Student Information System (the software used in a school to manage data such as scores, attendance, medical issues etc.).

STEAM – Science, Technology, Art, Engineering, Maths.

STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths.

UX – User Experience.

VLav – Virtual Labs.

VLE – Virtual Learning Environment.

Vlog – Video Log.
