Albrecht Blog: "Schedule Regular Library Inspection Days" + Friday Webinar: "Performance Evaluations" #library20

We've posted a new blog post from Dr. Albrecht in our "Library Safety & Security" section of Library 2.0: "Schedule Regular Inspection Days."

Think of all the cool stuff in your library you could be looking at to make sure it's working properly. There are lots of things to be examined to make sure they aren't broken, out of repair, leaking, hissing, sparking, or smoking. Indeed, there are too many things to look at in one day and you have other important work to do. So do what McDonald's franchisees do and put scheduled inspections on your calendar. Maybe some things need to be looked at every week, every month, every quarter, or once per year. Write them down in January and follow the guidance of your online or paper calendar when those events pop up... (click for full post)

The language we use as library leaders matters. This is important in our coaching conversations and in the way we handle both the Performance Evaluation (PE) documentation and the subsequent conversation. The PE is a legal, historical, trackable document that has power and consequences. It can help you and other leaders make effective and fair promotion decisions, identify skill or training gaps, initiate discipline, and create a path for your employees to improve their work performance and work behavior.

This webinar is for all current library directors, department heads, managers, supervisors, or any future leader who wants to know more about how to make PEs work for the benefit of the organization, the leader, and the employee.

In this 60-minute webinar, Dr. Steve Albrecht (board certified by the Society for Human Resource Management) will discuss the best ways for library leaders to:

  • Fine-tune the steps in the PE process, from the preparation of the documentation to the conversation;
  • Have the necessary coaching conversations that help you craft a solid PE;
  • Avoid using label-based language instead of behavior-based language to get better results after the PE meeting;
  • Handle the wide range of employee reactions or emotions during a PE meeting;
  • Think about your legacy as a leader and how PEs serve your library after you have promoted, left, or retired;
  • Protect yourself from claims about bias, being unfair, discriminatory, retaliatory, or overly judgmental; 
  • Avoid common PE traps like the Halo Effect, the Middle Grade, Fuzzy Language, and Punishment Phrases;
  • Change the thinking about PEs from being an annual process to a useful supervisory tool.

DR. STEVE ALBRECHT

As a trainer, speaker, author, and consultant, Dr. Steve Albrecht is internationally known for his expertise in high-risk HR issues. He specializes in workplace and school violence awareness and crisis response programs for private-sector firms, municipal and state government, K-12 schools, and colleges and universities. His clients include the two biggest municipal insurers in California.

In 1994, Dr. Albrecht co-wrote Ticking Bombs: Defusing Violence in the Workplace, one of the first business books on workplace violence. Besides his work as a conference presenter and keynote speaker, he appears in the media and on the Internet, as a source on workplace violence, security, and crime. His 21 business and police books include Library Security; Tough Training Topics; Added Value Negotiating; Service, Service, Service!; and Fear and Violence on the Job.

He holds a doctoral degree in Business Administration (D.B.A.), an M.A. in Security Management, a B.A. in English, and a B.S. in Psychology. He is board-certified in HR, security management, employee coaching, and threat assessment.
