Tool: A District’s ‘Look For’ Guide to Personalized Learning

This article is part of the guide: The Personalized Learning Toolkit.

Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine School District (KMSD) is featured in the Future Ready Leaders project’s professional learning resources as one of the nation’s leaders in personalized learning. (The project is showcased on the Department of Education’s website.) KMSD became recognized as a Future Ready school after an evaluation based on the 27 points of policies and practice within the focus areas.

As school leaders in KMSD worked through their transition to personalized learning, they created a snapshot guide that details the education styles that help educators identify the goals along the way.

KMSD’s Personalized Learning “Look Fors” guide identifies four elements: Learner-Driven, Learner-Centered, Teacher-Driven and Curriculum-Centered activities. It then characterizes factors that educators should “look for” as they evolve their work, including around the disposition of learners, as well as what it means to help learners develop their own path, pace, place, choice, and voice for learning.

Additionally, KMSD has become an example of implementation. KMSD was filmed as part of the Future Ready Leaders project to capture stories highlighting alignment with four research-based focus areas believed to be necessary for an effective district transition to digital learning. These are:

  • Collaborative leadership
  • Personalized student learning
  • Robust infrastructure
  • Personalized professional learning
