Empowering Students with Technology through Verizon Innovative Learning Schools

Schools across the country rapidly shifted to remote learning due to COVID-19-related closures. Students and teachers at Verizon Innovative Learning Schools—where every student receives a device that comes equipped with a data plan to support learning in and out of the classroom—had the advantage of already knowing how to use learning apps.

In our new video below, which was filmed several months before remote learning became a reality, educators at Madrid Neighborhood School in Phoenix, Arizona, share how the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools initiative has transformed learning for their students in their first year in the program, setting them up for success during school closures.

“We’re in a community that we need to make sure that our students are prepared just like the rest of the world,” said principal Stacy O’Rourke.

“As a teacher, in general I feel like things are always changing and it just shows how versatile a lot of us are,” said art teacher Desiree Dancer. “The students, as well, I think especially with technology. They’re all kind of understanding that we’re going through this process and learning together.”

Before schools closed, Madrid teachers noted how the iPads empowered students in the classroom. “Since implementing the technology, I’ve seen a lot of kids that may not have participated beforehand are starting to participate, are starting to collaborate, because they feel confident,” said English teacher Ellen Akilov.
