More Administrators Need to Blog

A Principal's Reflections

'Let me just come out and say it, I need more administrators (Principals and Superintendents) to blog. I would be willing to guess that I am not the only educator that feels this way. Below is a hypothetical letter that explains my rationale. Dear Principal/Superintendent: Good morning! You are probably wondering why you are receiving this letter out of the blue.

Student Cell Phone Etiquette

EdTechSandyK

'Recently one of the K-5 campus technology facilitators in my district contacted me to see if I had any resources regarding cell phone etiquette for elementary students. It seems that some students from her campus were passing along spam text messages along the lines of "forward this or something bad will happen to you". I looked through my digital citizenship and cell phone bookmarks and didn''t see anything specific to "spam texting".

danah boyd, on (1) Privacy on the Internet and (2) Why Teens Like to Hang Out on Social Networking Sites

mauilibrarian2 in Olinda

'(1) I always tell my students that privacy is never guaranteed on the Internet. I still believe that, but cultural anthropologist Dr. danah boyd (yes, her name has no caps), considered by many to be the "high priestess" of social media, says that everyone expects privacy on the Internet and that they are entitled to it. She gives examples of how Facebook, Google, and other developers can work toward insuring that privacy.

A New Way To Timeline

The Web20Classroom

'There are lots of Web 2.0 Timeline applications out there. I even wrote about one of my favorites, Timetoast , a year ago. Last week I came across a new player to the timeline game. Preceden is free to sign up and use. You have to have an email address (which is a drawback for some classrooms) and sign up takes as long as it take you to type a name and email.

SKJ for ALA in Second Life!

The Daring Librarian

'I support Sara Kelly Johns for President of ALA. I''ve met her, talked to her, read her webpage, and I think she has what it takes to represent us Librarians vigorously and nationally. And its time we had a school-based librarian in charge of the ALA. It''s been a few years (how many? don''t know. Bueller ? Anyone !?).Seriously though, I really think she can close the gap between ALA-AASL and ISTE-SIGMS.she *wants* to work together!

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Shorpy, Urchins, & This Fabulous Century

The Daring Librarian

'Funny how these interweb things happen. You do a google search for one thing and stumble upon another. Today i discovered Shorpy. "December 1910. " Shorpy Higginbotham , a ''greaser'' on the tipple at Bessie Mine, of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. in Alabama. Said he was 14 years old, but it is doubtful. Carries two heavy pails of grease, and is often in danger of being run over by the coal cars.
