Reform is Happening

A Principal's Reflections

'On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in October, approximately 400 passionate educators congregated at New Milford High School for the Tri-State Educational Technology Conference (TSETC). The brainchild of Schoology and myself, we set out in mid-August to plan an unprecedented free conference that would provide educators of varying experience with practical strategies to successfully integrate technology in the classroom.

Educators - Be Careful What You Post Online

EdTechSandyK

'I follow with interest the stories of educators whose careers have been damaged or even lost because of an indiscreet post they make online. Or in some cases an indiscreet post someone else makes about them or shares from their profile. It remains to be seen how this Georgia teacher''s case will pan out (unless I have missed a resolution somewhere in my research).

Talking Tom on iOS devices

SpeechTechie

'Talking Tom is a free iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app that allows children to interact with an onscreen cat. Speak and he will repeat what you say. Pet or poke him and he reacts. You can also serve him some milk, or bore him-resulting in yawns! The free version has some annoyances (an ad, 3 tease buttons on the side) that you can get rid of by actually purchasing the ad for $2.99.

Distributed knowledge in the workplace

Connecting 2 the World

I'm still working on this idea, but both Michael Hanley and Karyn Romeis have blogged about knowledge recently so I decided to post what I currently am grappling with. There are still a lot of questions to answer. Three types of knowledge In analyzing the data, knowledge could be placed into three categories: tangible representation of knowledge which could be found in policies, forms, formats, curriculum, degrees or credentials, records, and other artifacts at the individual, group, departmenta

Images We Can All Use

The Web20Classroom

'Yesterday on Twitter my good friend, Mary Beth , posted a video for her kids on how to find Creative Commons photos on Flickr. It is a great and simple tutorial that really anyone can use with teachers or kids. Short and simple. In addition to this video you could also check out the Creative Commons Search to find photos, music and video. Also check out Compfight , which is a tool that searches the CC photos in Flickr.

Standard vs. flexible: reconceptualizing the efficiency of "standardization of tools"

Connecting 2 the World

Yesterday I spent 2 hours in total frustration dealing with the administration of my daughter's education. Her schooling has been outstanding the last year and a half, but the administration of that schooling is complex to say the least. Her school district sends her to a regional high school that is funded by 31 different school districts. The high school is really just an alternative education program.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Use Pinball for connecting ideas.

SpeechTechie

'BBC Pinball is a new and interesting way to do some semantic mapping with your students. It literally has a lot of bells and whistles. Pinball allows you to choose from four different ways to "bounce ideas around" and might just be a good hook for some hard-to-engage students. Dot Dash is basically a semantic web, used for "firing out ideas." You can use Drop Zone to categorize ideas, and Snap Shot is basically for describing images.

Ancient Rome Was How Big?

The Web20Classroom

'Today I came across a very cool site from the BBC. It is called Dimensions and it takes important events in history and current events and shows how big they are over a give area on a Google Map. For example here is an image showing how big an area the flood in Pakistan is on the East Coast of the U.S. Kinda puts things in perspective. Or here is an image of what the footprint of the moon would look like centered over North America.
