Social Media in Education

A Principal's Reflections

'The other day Bill Ferriter told me that he was working on an article for ASCD and asked if I would answer a few questions. Of course I obliged as we are working on a book together for Solution Tree Press and I have come to know and greatly respect him as a member of my PLN. He is the author of The Tempered Radical. If you have never read his blog I highly suggest you do!

Elevating the Education Reform Dialog, Live on Monday

The Learning Revolution Has Begun

'Between the NBC "Education Nation" Summit , Waiting for Superman , The Oprah Winfrey Show , and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg''s $100 million gift to Newark city schools , there has been a lot of media attention focused on the topic of education reform. Unfortunately, much of it has excluded actual educators, let alone students. Furthermore, and perhaps as a consequence, the dialog has become divisive, blaming, and ultimately counter-productive.

Dewey Digger

SpeechTechie

'I am not sure how much students are held to knowing about the Dewey Decimal system as part of the Library curriculum (it probably varies), but the system itself is an interesting use of abstract categorization, a skill that often eludes our students. Dewey Digger is a very cool visual and interactive look at the system, where a click will bring you to subcategories, then visual search results (I''d recommend going to Google Images at that stage).

What's in a Name?

mauilibrarian2 in Olinda

'People have asked me, "Why Charlotte?" in the name of this blog? My answer: I wanted the name to constantly remind me of the child-like excitement I felt as I learned about the newest technologies at the 14th Annual American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Conference held in Charlotte, North Carolina, in November of 2009. Today, I''ve decided to change the name of this blog to MauiLibrarian2 in Olinda , where every day I feel that same excitement as we experiment using new technologies

Good Deals TODAY on the App Store

SpeechTechie

'Thanks to Moms with Apps for some great bargains today on the (US) iTunes App Store. Story Builder for iPad provides visual and written prompts to build basic stories. With clinician scaffolding, students can record sentences for each picture, and listen to a complete oral story at the end. This would be a great app to use in lower grades to build complex sentences and story grammar.

New technology demands for the 21st century classroom

Connecting 2 the World

Let me begin by defining the 21st century classroom. It is not the stagnent classroom of my childhood or university. Rather it crosses grades, generations, locations, and cultures. And yet, walk into any classroom today and it will physically look like the classroom my father sat in over 70 years ago. Education today is life long, formal and informal, and dynamic.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

The discussion about US education

Connecting 2 the World

Recently, there has been a national discussion of education in the US within our media. NBC and the Oprah Winfrey Show both had programs about education in the last two weeks. The final verdict: tenure is the reason our schools are failing and the responsibility of education is in the teachers' hands alone (they must be accountable for failing schools).
