The Opinion That Matters Most

A Principal's Reflections

'This morning I attended a meeting with students that represent New Milford High School and my superintendent. The purpose of the "Superintendent''s Council" is to allow students to have a voice and empower them to make meaningful changes to the culture of the District. During the meeting the students were asked what changes or initiatives they would like to see.

Bring Those Boring Binders To Life With Livebinders

The Web20Classroom

'I realized today that I have talked a lot about my various Livebinders but never really have taken the time to explain what they are or how they work. First, a video. Think of Livebinders as a virtual 3 ring binder that you can put pretty much anything in. Webpage, PDF, image, video, text, they all can go into a page organized for you. Each item can be on it''s own tab or you can further organize by using sub-tabs.

Wikipedia Is NOT Wicked!

The Daring Librarian

'Hi, My name is Gwyneth and I use Wikipedia every day. There, I said it. Somehow that''s pretty freeing! Wikipedia is NOT a dirty word. We''re doing a disservice not teaching our kids HOW to use it and how to cite it.as in - ummm selectively & with forethought. Sadly, I don''t believe teachers & college professors are ready to wrap their mind around or admit recent studies that show: Wikipedia as accurate as Britannica.

The Power of Reflection

A Principal's Reflections

'Over the past couple of days I have been preparing a presentation for K-12 Principals entitled "Harnessing the Power of Educational Technology" (I''ll share more about this at a later time). I must say that I have been quite impressed with myself as I decided to create the entire full day presentation using Google Sites. During what seemed to be countless hours of tweaking presentations, searching for videos, and deciding what content I wanted to cover I found myself reflecting on my growth as

Developing The Leaders Within.

The Web20Classroom

'Cross Posted At The ASCD In-Service Blog When I started teaching, I had no desire to take on any leadership roles in my school. Yet in my nine years as a classroom teacher and technology integration specialist, I''ve led as a team leader, grade-level chair, school improvement team chair, and district technology team chair. How did I get here? Straight out of school, I started teaching in a classroom with students who had essentially been kicked out of their home school and fallen behind by seve

Culture and Technology

Connecting 2 the World

This post is as much a work in progress to help me understand some of what I am seeing in my dissertation. So I apologize for the lack of specific references at this point. I am hoping to find some to support some of the ideas I have uncovered. Defining Culture and Technology There has been a lot written over the last 2 decades on the impact of culture on technology and the impact of technology on culture.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Master's Degree Completion

EdTechSandyK

'The count-down widget from my M.Ed. portfolio! Just a short entry to commemorate the fact that I believe I just hit the submit button for the final time in the pursuit of my master''s degree in Educational Technology Leadership. Since this blog started at the same time as my degree , it seemed I should mark the occasion! I have no major reflections to share at this moment, as I am all reflected out after the final course, but I may have some graduate thoughts to share in the future.

Crowdsourcing in School? -- COOL!

mauilibrarian2 in Olinda

'Is crowdsourcing the same as collaboration, and is it something we could do at our school? Crowdsourcing is the buzzword these days. It piqued my interest this morning because of the cool art projects that are springing up that might interest our teachers and students. As I did a little research about the word, I discovered that crowdsourcing is something colleges and universities are beginning to take seriously. A Science Fair Revolution: Putting the Trifold on Trial

The Daring Librarian

'(graphic by Tim Holt) The digital shift revolution in educational practice isn''t about throwing everything out that has been done before (sometimes to Ad nauseam ) but to add projects & product choices that enhance learning and better demonstrate research assessments and the comprehension of data. In other words: does a diorama and the science fair trifold with pasted on pictures & graphs really best show that the student has grasped the meaning and complexity of the research project.

Why Comment?

SpeechTechie

'I thought I would post to encourage your (continued) comments. For years, I thought of sharing ideas by putting together a book, or getting out there more with presentations, but I picked blogging as a platform, and am so glad that I did. Other media can be so one-way (well, presentations are interactive, but a book or even a wiki, not so much). Truthfully, the creative energy I find in being an SLP is what keeps me going, but knowing you are reading is a huge reinforcement.
