Field of Dreams

A Principal's Reflections

'As I write this post I am sitting in the Des Moines airport waiting for my flight back to the East Coast. I was fortunate to spend the last few days here in Iowa as a guest of Scott McLeod who founded and runs the C.A.S.T.L.E. program at Iowa State University. The purpose of my trip here was to learn about the deployment, facilitation, and observable impact of 1:1 laptop programs in various Iowa school districts.

'Fall is an interesting time in the private practice. We focus on social communication groups, and though we go to great pains to match kids well to get some good dynamics, sometimes you just don''t know what is going to happen until they are all in the room together. Plus in the Fall, some kids are brand new, others had no interventions over the summer, and yet more just.change.

How mobile technology and facebook is changing how we communicate

Connecting 2 the World

I have noticed lately that the emails I get from my students are shorter and much more direct. I have also noticed that some of the comments on my kids' facebook seem almost cruel in their brevity, communicating something that can be misunderstood. After doing some quick analysis, I realized that those messages that stood out as being "different" were sent from mobile technology.

Today's Lesson: Facebook. Friend or enemy in the classroom?

A Principal's Reflections

'Facebook, the premiere social networking site, is used by hundreds of thousands of students all over the world. While the site has become somewhat of a nuance for most teachers—they distract from valuable study and class time—some schools are embracing the social media site with welcoming arms. Not only are some schools incorporating Facebook into their lesson plans, but they are also tutoring students as young as 6-years-old on how to ''properly'' use the site.

Don't Hate the Hashtag: A Social Media Revolution for School Librarians

The Daring Librarian

'Being asked to be the keynote at MASL was a huge compliment, and I''m honored to speak to my fellow Maryland teacher-librarians. My tough-love message is one that is a little hard to hear, one that doesn''t accept the "yeah, buts" and excuses of county filters, the locked net monster, and draconian IT departments but hopefully one that will offer a lot of easy ways to make the digital shift that will solidify our position as invaluable and undeniably the EdTech and literacy leaders in our build

'Last I left you, I was frazzled, having had a rather bumpy 1st group with some new kids. There were mass interruptions, some shouting, mean words. The promise of time with my iPad grounded everyone, pretty much saving the session from utter ruin. There was an incident with a tree upon exit, but we don''t need to talk about that. One of my favorite sayings, attributed to Einstein: "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

"Design" a Habitat

'Check out this great interactive from Switcheroo Zoo that allows kids to not so much "design" a habitat but make choices and receive feedback on elements such as preciptation and vegetation. The site approaches the activity with humor, as the creatures'' thought bubbles let you know what they think about changes in the habitat.
