A Principal's Reflections

'The following is a guest post by Danielle McCartan. Danielle is a foreign language teacher at Ramapo High School in NJ and currently enrolled as a graduate student at the College of NJ. Only Learning Halfway

The Web20Classroom

'Back in March I had the chance to sit in and learn with David Warlick. I had heard David speak but not present. So this was a great opportunity for me to learn from and with one of the people I admire most in the education world. I sat in on 2 of his sessions, one on data visualization and the other on social media conversations. They were both very fascinating conversations where he demonstrated some pretty powerful tools.

Where I'm At.

SpeechTechie

'I think about this time last year, I wrote a career update. At that time, I was switching from my position as an Instructional Tech Specialist at a middle school in my district of Newton, MA, back to an SLP position at the elementary school level. Interest in my professional development services has been very steady, and in fact, more than I can really handle in the one day a week allotted for

Libraries without walls

Learning with 'e's

I recently wrote about how libraries are adapting to the digital age. The traditional library is viewed by many as a place for stacks of books to gather dust, and where stern librarians in tweed jackets tell you to keep quiet. Libraries are shaking off this image, and embracing new technologies and approaches to support learning in the 21st Century.

The use of hyperlinks

Connecting 2 the World

Jenny Luca had an interesting post about the teaching of hyperlinks in k-12. I actually wrote about this in 2007 and 2008. This is an area I'm very interested in once I get my dissertation completed. My comment on her blog was I wrote about this is 2008. Part of the problem in the English language is that we teach writing as a linear process and hyperlink writing requires spatial writing.

Getting Learning out of the Classroom with Augmented Reality

Nik Peachey

For a while now I have been expounding the wonders of augmented reality (See: Augmented Reality and Web 3.0 ) , so I thought it was time at last to give some examples of how we can actually get students using this technology and to show how it can superimpose the Internet onto their physical world. So here are some teaching suggestion which exploit two augmented reality type apps and gives students some reading, listening and speaking practice, as well as a bit of exercise.

Transparency is the New Black

The Daring Librarian

'I''ve written about the importance web presence and transparency since I started this blog. (and I apologize for my early over use of ellipses & lack of the shift key!) Now, more than ever, education professionals must be visible and transparent in what they do and with their program and practice. It''s easy to become overwhelmed with the thought of building a web presence from scratch -- but it''s easy to fashion a fabulous functional digital footprint with a few easy pieces !

Painting with Time- Climate Change "lets your fingers reveal the dramatic ways our world is changing from rising temperatures.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Working through Conflict

'Conflict can either break people and teams apart, or it can bring productivity and innovative solutions to move forward. The types of conflict that break people and teams apart are the interpersonal conflicts that occur. However, cognitive conflict is the disagreement about approaches and ideas. If the team recognizes and understands the types of conflict, it can be a resource to nurture productivity.
