Chrome Can: File Conversion

One of the things we will all run into sometime in our lives when working with files on various computers, using different types of software is compatibility issues.  Not all computers and or web services are compatible with all file types. Possibly, what you want to do, will work better with a different type of file. For example, maybe you need to convert a video from .MOV format to .MP4 or .and audio file from AAC to .MP3.

This sounds like one of those things you need a “real” computer for.  A Chromebook couldn’t possibly be able to do this type of heavy, professional computing.

Actually, it is way easier than you think and the possibilities of conversion are almost endless.

The two online converters I am introducing today can convert the following file types.

File Formats that can be converted online

Both of these websites allow you to upload a file from your computer, convert it and then download the converted file back to your computer.

To convert using Online-Convert.Com all you need to do is choose the type of conversion you would like to make.

Then, either select the file you want to convert from your computer, provide the URL the file is located at or import the file from either Dropbox or Google Drive. You can then change some optional settings.

After you are done, you can also login to save these conversion settings for conversions you will do next time. To begin the conversion, click start conversion.

The file will be uploaded to the server, converted and then downloaded to your computer.

It is that simple! Chromebooks have the power to convert files because of amazing web applications.  It is these services that are getting more powerful every day that continually improve the capabilities of Chromebooks and are why I believe this type of computing is the future.  It is also why I know that most people don’t need to waste their hard earned money on a $1200 laptop.

Convertio works very similar and also allows you to convert fonts.

The ability to convert files is very important when students are wanting to create, collaborate and communicate in the digital world.

I hope it is becoming clearer that Chromebooks are not just glorified web browsers.
