Global Math Project and Game-a-Thon Summer Challenge Update

Back in May, our friend and Global Math Project co-founder James Tanton issued a challenge to himself and others to let go of their preconceived notions and try something new. For James, it was his relationship to sports that he was trying to change. By taking on that personal challenge, James hoped to inspire others to change their relationship with math by embracing new math experiences.

He certainly inspires us, and through our national K-12 Game-a-thon, we offer an opportunity for students, teachers and parents across the country to embrace math by assembling a team and designing a game that solves a mathematical problem.

Not long after James issued his challenge, the Orlando Math Circle invited him to Lake Highland Prep School, for an for an exchange of mathematical and basketball ideas. Joining him for the event were students from area schools, as well as the NBA player Bo Outlaw of the Orlando Magic. Bo shared his basketball expertise with James and the students, and in return, James introduced all of them to his mathematical story, Exploding Dots. You can see a video recap of the event in the player below:

As far as the Game-a-thon, we had almost triple the amount of submissions for this year's event as we did in 2017! We are currently finalizing the team of judges that will be reviewing all of the games that were submitted in order to determine this year's winners. For a sample of the creativity and teamwork Game-a-thon participants display, check out one of last year's winning games, "Math Vortex," which was submitted by students in Minnesota.

Stay tuned for the announcement of this year's Game-a-thon award winners, and head over to the official site for The Global Math Project to learn more about Global Math Week 2018 and register to participate!
