Taking Control Of Your Professional Development

The Web20Classroom

Recently I was talking to a teacher friend of mine. He is what I would consider a very good teacher. Education Policy’s Roost (On Social Justice Warriors)

The Jose Vilson

Less than a year ago, I was in a heated conversation (we’ll call it that) where a few folks who disagreed on education policy brought their frustrations to full display. Unbeknownst to the folks who I agreed with, the conservative dissenters are encouraged to engage with, start sh*t, and frustrate folks like us. At one point, after one of the folks in “my” group decided she couldn’t take the direction of the conversation, a dissenter promptly called her a Nazi.

Turning Learning On Its Head

Summer is just around the corner, and teachers are both grieving and celebrating the end of the school year. For me, the end of a school year was always bittersweet. Yet, on the other hand, summer gave me time to rejuvenate, play, and learn.

Students Like Flipped Homework More!

Turning Learning On Its Head

I am about to complete a book about the relationship between flipped learning and homework. While writing the book, I realized that I needed to hear from students about their perceptions and thoughts about flipped homework. I reached out through my network of flipped teachers and asked them to have their students take a survey. Before looking at the survey results I want to emphasize that there is great debate about the value and purpose of homework.

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

The Tesla Powerwall fails: life as an early adopter

Bryan Alexander

On May 3rd we started using a Tesla Motors Powerwall at home. The thing is basically a giant battery, used in our case to supply electricity when grid power fails. We live in a remote location and power comes via fragile above-ground lines, so electricity goes offline fairly often. At least once during the past few weeks since the Powerwall’s installation we’ve experienced brief electrical outages (circa 20 minutes).
